Hey guys. I'll just put it straight:
I had to get a REAL job for a bunch of reasons. And I am going to be honest - one of the reasons is that I am actually tired of drawing commissions. I was doing it for 8 years straight and my batteries gone empty at this point.
The truth is, I am not going to take any new commissions. I don't know yet if it's temporal or not. I did not start my job just yet, but I am already approved to start next month. So I don't know how this whole situation is going to work for me.
Sure thing people who already paid, will get their pictures. Do not worry, I have a list and I remember about everyone of you. Including pictures I promised at GDAcon and some art-trades. I also will continue doing collab-commissions with other artists time to time.
If I'll have any new information, I'll share it here.
But at this point I want to finish the GIANT pile of commissions I have to do and I'm not going to take any new ones.
There is no way I am going to completely leave my creative activity in this community. I just have to make some big changes in my personal and artistic life.
I hope for your patience and understanding!

Art isn't a real job amirite???
To be fair lots of artists say 'real job' when we get a non-art job, but art as a job doesn't make it any less 'real'.
Money is evil but you gotta haves it someways. ;)
And the masses are fickle. Especially in economically uncertain times. :p
It's called depression, and it can happen to anyone. As for it being 'more easy to have a vacation', if you can afford it, no it's not. Your employer gets to tell you whether or not you get a day/week off. If you work for yourself, you're the one who gets to choose.
The average furry artist working commissions as their job usually has a very small margin between meeting all their monthly financial requirements and not. Yes, they have the freedom to choose to take a day off whenever they want to, but any kind of vacation means not only an expense drawing money from any savings they may have been able to make, but also a cease to new income generated by new work. The perception of a greater freedom for the average self-employed furry artist is massively reduced when you account for the financial immobility.
So yes, while all of this does depend on vastly different individual circumstances, IN GENERAL, a "real job" working for someone else in a non-art capacity will require use of skills less dependant on personal mood/motivation/inspiration than artwork, and will more commonly come with sick/vacation days, at the cost of putting yourself more at the beck and call of a boss. Self-employment comes with more 'freedom,' but the trade-off is less security - you may have a month where commission work dries up, you have less profit margin to set aside savings for vacations or emergencies ( VERY few furry artists are willing to charge much more than the bare minimum they need to pay the bills ), so while you may have more freedom, you have less ability to make use of it.
Art is certainly a real job if you go at it as such, it just has the trade-offs as you spoke about. The problem is making art your job in THIS fandom, the market for furry artists here doens't exactly encourage doing it as a Career Choice.
you are absolutely right on the living standars of every person, for myself I live in a poor country with a terrible economy and high inflation rates, just the fact that i'm earning in dollars is such a HUGE advantage to my daily living, I can work for a few weeks and work enough money to get a new PC but here, getting a real job, I would have to work for YEARS of minimum wage not spending a single dime just to get semi-good pc.
So yes, it all depends on the living standars of every person, wether they're based on their location or just merely their way of living.
That's far from limited to furry artists though, I don't think MOST people my age or younger have much in the way of retirement plans... it's gonna be scary to see what happens in another 30-40 years. >_<
Plus as someone else stated, it really depends on your standard of living. MY standard of living is "Room rent, food, HOPEFULLY some extra cash for fun things." - one day I'd LIKE to have a house, but it'll still be "Pay rent/bills, have food, MAYBE have extra for luxuries." If I can earn enough to hang out with friends and maybe go to a con or two every year, I'll be happy.
Another plus, I have a boyfriend who I honestly have no intentions of breaking up with. We've been living together for a year and I'd be happy living with him for the rest of my life - and he at least plans on having a 'real' job. So I'd be able to piggy back off of him every so often, and he'll piggy back off of me every so often, like we've been doing for the past year. :P
So I'm certainly not going to tell other people what to do, but it's wise to try and save money and have it there for an emergency. Unless you're in a country with an okay social safety net, it'd suck to be 60~70 years old and having nothing to fall back on.
That's one of the reasons for my concern with all these struggling artists trying to make a career out of furry artwork. I'm sure it's possible for some, but that's a small minority I would imagine.
lol.

My circumstances kind of chose for me. I don't have marketable skills or high level formal education, I have a side job but it is not even going to cover basic monthly bills for most people, so, you know, gotta put my hope on art as the only way of moving forward. A lot of people are struggling, without jobs, etc, and are just doing whatever they can to get by, whether that's working at Walmart or doing furry art, and can't even think about retirement even if they'd want to
The rise of auctions, ych, and patreon is a simple result of the fact that they put the determination of the value of an artist's work in the hands of their audience, and not the artist - which hey, surprise, almost always results in significant pay increase for the artist.
But the problem with artists making more than min wage when they start charging such.... is the fact that there's so many artists in this fandom who are willing to charge less than minimum wage. So much supply with not as strong a demand.
While the market for simply "furry art" is exceedingly saturated, and too many people charging practically nothing, I think that really just helps keep the bargain-bin buyers occupied, but the ones who understand and appreciate the value of custom-tailored artwork seem to consistently be more than willing to accept higher prices to get what they want, even if it means fewer commissions. So artists looking to escape the bargain bin really just have to learn to ignore the whining that comes from people who are just angry that they can't impulse-buy from them anymore.
I think a bigger factor in up-and-coming artists trying to make commission work a viable income is that unless you're just an insanely phenomenal talent and/or have a exciting new style, it's just going to take a lot of time to build up enough of a following to be able to support yourself with commission work. There's no shortage of amazingly talented people that still struggle just because they're relative newcomers and haven't gotten the exposure needed to sustain full time commission work yet.
There was no chances for me to finish it all from the very beginning.
But best of luck with your new career.
Your choice is fully understandable, though. Good luck in your new job, i hope it'll give you a break and you'll recharge your artistic batteries. Sounds like an artistic burn out, I feel you on this.
"Sure, just look at any furry porn site and you'll see tons of my art all over the place."
Sorry, not to be insulting. Honestly I'm a bit sad to hear that. I was finally getting to the point I had the means to commission you. But I also would rather you well both emotionally, mentally and financially.
So, not that my opinion or anyone else but your's mattered in this, but don't feel any thing but support from my end. Hope it works out for you and you find a happy medium between the needs of yourself and the continued interest of your many fans. Of which I will continue to remain.
Who knows what awaits you in this job? I'm currently in the works to train at Tim Hortons.
why is the sky blue?
why does it feel good to walk around nu-- oh oh about the real job thing. naw im good.
Good luck in you endeavors.
I'm sure my mate is in tears about now, you're his role model for art. :> Good luck and hope you find that spark again!
just draw for you in the mean time to keep your art muscles good
I pray for the best in your job man :) I know what its like to be burned out from drawing, even if I draw more as a hobby. I imagine that the stability of employment is way more worth it than people think!!
Good luck and a nice day.^^
On a similar path myself right now.
Making the slow fade away from commissions as soon as my debt is paid.
Hope you still have time to do a bit of artz here and there, but I'll understand it if time doesn't allow for it.
You said you aren't completely abandoning your creative activity in the community, maybe Critique will be a good outlet to both help others a long and give you a rest from the previous 'workload'?
(This is all just a thought.)
Regardless, Hope the lifestyle change is both refreshing and enjoyable.
Good luck out there, Nail~
good to hear you finally got that issue right, living out from commissions is hard, we all know that. and a break from a pile of commissions and commissioners themselves will definatelly do you good.
tho, i still cound on that collab thing one day mabey :U
I'm curious, though, after all commissions are out of the way, will you continue on with personal art in your own free time? And will you post it online?
I also expect I huge skills improvement, as soon as I'll be free from stress and will be able to draw for myself. Because now I feel guilty to spend my time on learning new tutorials instead making money to pay the rent.
Надеемся что нам доведётся увидеть твои работы, пусть и не заточенные в кругу нашего общества.
Congrats on the job, btw. :D
then you open ladder auction commission slots
GENIUS
Wish your best and good luck! Hopefully we'll still see you around with personal art. Possibly YCHs or Rare commissions, which will go up in value due to its rarity =p
I hope you continue drawing though, not to take commissions, but for yourself, I mean you have talent, don't let that go to waste, that would make me sad :(

Hope you haven't forgotten us!
I wish you the best for your new job tho.
I don't know what I was thinking when I promised this waiting-pool. I did not wanna say "no" to this huge pile of awesome commission ideas and now I have to cancel it.
I am very sorry about it. But there was never chances for me to finish even half of this list.
Буду художником в гейм-индустрии с ориентацией на казино.
I hope it's not too stressfull on you
Good luck with the job!
If I may ask what will you be doing? I am quite curious, sorry for prying. xD
Was wondering if it was something that is also a break from the PC or something that your skill are helping you out with now.
I am a modeler and texturer for a small 3d company, it helps me appreciate the "free range" commissioners give me where as my job is super specific about what they want. |D
I always say, first comes you then others. Its good you are explaining so no one should bitch
I understand to a degree of there is no drive there is no drive and forcing it out sucks.I do hope your job goes well however

When you feel that your batteries for comissions are deplated you're doing best thing to not dissapoint your fans and leave stage while you are undefeated and you may return one day in whole glory :)
Wish you luck on your new job though.
lmfao i hope that was sarcasm.
I pay taxes quarterly, what are you talking about?

Good luck to you and it's been an honor working with you each opportunity that I was lucky enough to get.
I actually made this account to do writing commissions, turns out, when money got involved I did not enjoy writing. Something about money made my feel like when I write it had to be my best, no room for sloppiness, unwanted pressure. Hopefully we'll see some drawing from ya, you're a fantastic artist and we'd had to see you hang up the brush.
Oh heck, one you start your new job start commissioning art.
Scott
I pretty much got to the same point and been working full time now ^_^
Like any hobby, once it becomes a job it can turn into a chore. Having furry stuff take a back seat may help rekindle things over-time.
My job was eating somuch time I had to
Quiet comissions as well and never regret it.
No pressure and plenty time for own Projects :3
Well I certainly will drain you comission wise
This ef in case i never get the chance again x3;
I do hope you enjoy your new job for what it's worth. Very few people can be forced to do this for years and not eventually just get burned out on it.
I just hope we'll still see some art from you, even if not furry related, your style itself is pretty awesome! :)
:C
I do have a question though, in your iron artist queue i do not see my name listed, i have already paid my commission in full. so i was just curious if maybe you forgot to write mine down in the journal.
Thanks!
Eight long years. Don't they go by in a blink?
Hopefully you'll be still posting personal non-commission art? :3
I mean your genitals, Wolfy. Your genitals.
Also, look into urban permaculture. Thanks.
May your new job be fun and very lucrative :)
Still, whatever you choose to do, I wish you well.
I see you mentioned that you're applied for game related artist job.
I have some experience working as concept artist on game studio once. It's quite an enjoyable experience :)
Here's some suggestion, avoid office drama. I mean, that shit can make and break your career :P
Also, I dont know if your have art-director or the person who approved stuff has some artistic skill as mine he has little to no knowledge about art LOL
Gentle winds and calm seas.. ^.^
I'm glad that you had the voice to say this publicly, even though people may be upset. it appears most seem to be happy for you and your choice. While working as a vet and a freelance artist, burn-out comes naturally. I hope that you end up loving your job and I am looking forward to seeing your creations around as you continue to produce beautiful products of your own imagination.
I wish you the best of luck and congratulate you upon your new job position.
I'm curious, did you have to deal with any stigma of doing adult work during your job search? Any advice for others in a similar situation?
I admire your skills and style a lot, and I really wanna follow you on your galleries and see how you improve, if you do another one or something, please consider to share it with us!
no matter if is furry or not! we will be there suporting you!
take it easy and do what is the best for you! good luck!
I learned some neat tips from your tutorials regardless.
Good luck to you, you know your way.
Still, I am quite bummed out by the fact that you are drasticaly cutting down on your commissions intake. Really wanted to get You to draw something very naughty with Geno. Hm, maybe instead we can do a trade sometime in the future?~
I mean, the whole stability thing, but with an art job going, maybe you'll be around
with your own projects around here, yeah?
I wish you the best of luck and I hope everything works for you.
Love, Peace, and Taco Grease!
I'm still really happy that I got that collab video gaming commission from you and Malware when I did. It's definitely one of my favorites.
Just happy to know you are still alive. Big luv bruv
