Long before Dragonborn were thought of, Forgotten Realms has Saurials. The one featured in the novels was named Dragonbait and was featured in the books: Azure Bonds, Song of the Saurials, and Masquerades

There's a seven book series called "Death Gate Cycle" that I really enjoyed. It's not all that dragon heavy unfortunately, but it has a pretty cool world. In book two there's a surprisingly influential character who has a dragon companion and in the last book you get to find out a character does share a history with a dragon line. That probably isn't enough to be what you're looking for, but I still recommend it.

Hmm... I know of a series of middle-fantasy novels called the Age of Fire series by E. E. Knight that had dragons as the main characters. First book is called Dragon Champion, I'd suggest looking it up c:

It's not a fantasy series but you might enjoy the temeraire series. It's an alt history series set during the napolionic war where dragons exist. The series follows a British captain and the dragon egg he captures from the French, which eventually hatches. The dragons in the series are highly intelligent

Try the Eberron series maybe? I have one that features dragon-touched (Those who have dragon blood). Never really got into them all that much...

As for dragons being main characters, good luck! Most dragons (mostly Chromatic dragons) tend to be BIG at being antagonistic, because they are evil... and metallic dragons would usually act as supporting characters... They seem too powerful to make good characters in D&D novels

One series I would DEFINITELY recommend is the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, & Inheritance) if you haven't read them yet. These were my FAVORITE!

I've read Inheritance Cycle as a kid, but the writtings a bit too simple now that im older.
