What's the story with the blown power supply? No secondary, only one in the chassis? Or did it blow up the bus when it went. I had some early 6513's that used to blow up when one of the two powersupplies cooked. I hate it when a 10 minute job turns into a "Frick, we gotta change the chassis" night mare!

Well, this was an HP 2910al-48G-POE+ with an External Power Supply. The EPS was there to give it enough juice to run all the phones and wireless APs that it serviced. The crazy thing is the switch blew its internal supply, but blew it in such a weird way that when you hooked the EPS up, it faulted, and the logs said the EPS was the issue (which wasn't actually true). At any rate, it didn't matter - the 2910al-48G-POE+'s are being phased out and replaced by 2920al-48G-POE+s, which have 1050W internal (changeable) power supplies, which are better than the old unit+EPS anyway. Additional headaches were caused by the fact that I couldn't remove the old switch because whoever installed it completely stripped one of the screw-heads. Another guy had to go over with power tools today and cut the bolt out.

Gawh! I hate that! Microprocessor with tolerances of a trillionth of an inch? Check! Pot metal screws stamped out of whatever we found behind the warehouse? Check! Ship it!

If I ever run a national data centre again, I'm going to teach everyone remedial "screw gun 101" Today's lesson class, is how to set the clutch so you don't strip screws or rail threads! Tomorrow, we'll learn to paint all of our tools bright pink, so no one will steal them.


Interesting story about the 2920, good to know. I was just in the market for a few of those.

*laughs!!* That is awesome - TOTALLY going to quote that to the guys, and read that to the Mrs. as well (she laughed). Yet, SO TRUE. Our main switch guy has been at it for 25 years. For the last 15, the installs have been done by the Machine and Cabling group, and pretty much for all 15 of those years, he's been constantly lecturing them on stripping screws, but they insist on using power tools either without slip gears or just set wrong because they're in a hurry, and they know they don't have to go back and deal with it if it breaks. Oi.
