I like them as a way for those of us that don't have tons of ideas but like an artists style to get something that we enjoy from that artist. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of getting a commission. It also lets an artist explore other ideas or themes that they may not get explicitly asked for very often or at all.

On the other hand if you do 100 recolor's or various scenes in a theme, it can pigeonhole an artist into a fetish and then they wont get much else for ideas from commissioners.

All in all I think they're nice, but they should supplement an artist, not be their bread and butter.

The cons don't seem so bad, if it was a raffle or an auction, I think people would whine regardless.

Well, I like being able to see what a commission will look like, but even if there's only one, it doesn't really fell.... unique. I think it's because it's already planned, and the character is the last thing to go in -- it's not built around the characters personality.
I think that's why my favorite YCH's are the ones where there are a certain number of them for a set price. Like "I'm doing ten of this pose for $X.xx dollars." I don't know why, but that always seems the most straight forward, like it's admitting it's a kind of business transaction where you're paying for the artists time and skills.

I'd think a lot of that would be sorta negated by people being like "Well my OC doesn't seem to fit here"
Generally though, I'm not a fan of like YCH's that recycle poses over and over.

I guess it's preference then. Sense it wasn't designed for anyone in particular, I love looking at a pose and going "Yeah, I could buy one of those."

Besides, in the real world, when you're drawing a model, they tend to have a set of "classic" poses. Those show up a lot in the old master pieces.

Pros:
The artist can make a pretty decent amount on a ych.
Some people actually enjoy bidding wars and such on art.
If the artist has unfinished or unused sketches laying around it's a good way to use them and make some money while doing it.

Cons:
Not a guaranteed way of making money.
Multiple character auctions can have a down side to customers because you don't always know who you'll be paired with.
Fake bids.
Customers may Not always win the auction and that can suck if you really wanted the spot.

There's probably more pros and cons but I can't think of too many atm.

It sounds like starting off with a single YCH would be the way to go.

auction YCH pro:
You're going to get a butt ton of money since you have a big enough fan base you could prolly get as much as you want and then some. like if you do a YCH auction and let it run for like a week or more it will definitely go over 200 easy, and likely go over 100 in the first hour you open it. especially since you don't open commissions much.

con:
hope they're not drug lords and that you get caught up in their convoluted plan of laundering money through furry porn. Also i guess the people you would be drawing would be a more limited pool of the ones who have huge amounts of money to spend on one pic.

From a commissioner point of view I think YCH's i think it's never worth it since most of the time i can get a commission from them for half the price (and that's if it's a slow one, i imagine a YCH from you would go for like 4 times what it would cost to commission you). and if they never commision than that sucks but i would prolly get like 3 or 4 pics with the same amount of money the winner spent on the YCH.

If they're discounted or free, then sure why not? It's cheap/free for the commissioner and the artist gets to draw a pose they prefer.

If it's the same as full price or more, why bother? A commission would cost just as much and have way more freedom.

My biggest gripe with them, is there is a severe lack of affordable ways of doing YCH. I mean, without financially hurting the artist. I'm sure there are a fair amount of artists that do YCH soley cause of how competitive people can get with auctions. Though, alot of those people are the same few that have disposable incomes, so we get less variety in the art thats coming from the artists. Just the same faces. (Not saying this is a common ground for all artists, just a few I've noticed.) I also think that it is a rather expensive avenue for the buyers, leaving them to perhaps go above what they're comfortable with, though that's at their discretion to be fair.

I dunno I think in the end I , personally, would probably stick to getting commissions, and leave people to bid on YCH and let artists do as they please with their artwork ^//^ I think a big pro for YCH's is that it gives the artist complete freedom on the scene.

I don't think pre-poses are inherently bad and I'm content in just ignoring them if I don't like the pose-or if multiple slots are being offered for individual characters, I don't want some stranger's character's dong in my character--, but personally I would never participate in an auction and don't condone their use because fairness becomes a huge issue. They almost always benefit the artist at the expense of their fans/customers. It forces potential buyers to compete-something that some enjoy and others hate--, you get people monopolizing artists with heaps of disposable income, artists leveraging popularity to get paid better while offering less, almost everyone inevitably gets left out; I can think of too many ways for it to go wrong to reasonably list here. I think the fairest way to offer pre-poses, for artist and customer alike, is to host free-to-enter raffles with the slot as the prize; that way, everyone gets a fair shake and you end up avoiding a lot of the associated unpleasantness in the process, while the artist gets to draw what they want with a clear conscience.

Pros : Finishing sketches for poses where you weren't quite sure where you were going with them.
People will bid way too high and you'll get lots of money for doing something you were gonna do anyway

Cons : People will unwatch you for it sometimes.
Whoever has the deepest wallet automatically eats up all of your auctions, and it will make your gallery very one-sided with only their set of characters.
Drama furs may end up with someone they dislike and back out
Can stagnate yourself with only poses you're comfortable with
Can't really turn down the character of the highest bidder if it's an auction, you'll be drawing shitty sparkledogs.

I'm perfectly fine with them, if they're the exception rather than the rule. Like a monthly YCH, as to not cover your regular art in YCHs.

YCHs cost, as a few other commenters already mentioned, usually a small fortune. That's definitely benificial for you, doing YCHs over things like raffles makes is fairly difficult for the people with limited funds to be able to get a hold of some of your art. And we all know furries will do everything for cheap/free things, so to put it simple: YCH could make more money, free art raffles will definitely get you more exposure. It's up to you which one you prefer, or you could just mix the two up.
