Game Pre-Review: Dark Sector
Being bored the other day i decided to pick a cheap game off the steam game line up. One that i found that had been reviewed well previously and interested me was Dark Sector.
In this game you play a secret agent who gets infected by the evil genius's super virus thingy slowly gaining special powers while transforming that make us wonder.. Why do evil geniuses always do these sorts of things. (See Sin Episode 1) Because you know theses powers unlock just in time to beat the evil guys plans.
Overall the game is quite graphically solid. Some minor clipping issues here and there. But one of my biggest complaint as far as graphics go.. the lack of blood decals. There is a shit load of blood spilling everywhere as you hack off arms, heads, legs and torsos of your unfortunate foes but unlike Left 4 Dead when someone gets kill by a witch you never really have time to think.. OH shit that's a lot of blood. Over all though, a very minor complaint. The other complaint i have is the blur effects when you turn your head. If the game was in First person I probably wouldn't mind it as much As i could still probably see through it. But a flick of the mouse and you go flying and shooting at only god knows what.
Sound is also quite good. Guns sound like they do damage unlike some previous games i played where the sound is all muffled and they sound more like cork guns. (Soldier Front) Though there are somethings i wish for the sound is that some troops make more of a noise. Specifically the troops that are carrying a huge shield that is impervious to all bullets and has to be struck with your boomerang thingy and then your pistol.
Oh yeah, before i get on to my biggest complaint about the game as a whole, lets talk about the Glaive. This boomerang thingy is your main focus of all your powers. Initially you get to only throw it. But it eventually becomes your flashlight and your key. Power thowing allows you to get past big gates with lots of chains, or open chests with lots of chains. It also allows you to kill targets in one hit. It does some Legend of Zelda stuff, allowing you to pick up objects or activate switches you cannot reach manually. Then it allows you to control it in sort of a fly by wire way. There are more powers, but i haven't gotten to them yet.
My biggest complaint? Controls. The game plays like Gears of War so much so I was having some flash backs to when i sucked horribly (playing GoW for the first time). However this does not Translate well into keyboard/mouse. Ctrl is your sprint, defense and roll button. You hold Z to pick up items, tapping it reloads. C is the button you use to throw the glaive, and mind you, the glaive is ultimately your main weapon.
The after touch (fly by wire) becomes highly sparatic. Sometimes it will go off, some times it will not. Sometimes you can make a very hard sharp turn, other times its a wide looping turn. Its bloody difficult to control, and not in a good way. Often times the character will actually shoot the thing you are hiding behind with both the glaive and his gun, though your targeting thing is clearly away from it. This becomes dangerous and annoying when you are using a rocket launcher to kill the big bad robotanks.
Ultimatly i'd give it a 6/10 thus far. Possibly lower. Its good clean action fun, but those controls bog it down to a bloody mess.. or actually a bloodless mess :(
