Scanners are pretty evil things they demand high prices and can be temperamental

Really? Mine is built-in in my HP Deskjet 1510 printer and that one was like 50 bucks on amazon.
And the quality is actually quite good for such a cheapish device, just a bit noisy.

I'm just talking from my own experience my previous scanner was rather pricy and pretty much was dead on arrival sadly

That sucks and now that i look over amazon i notice that pure scanners do cost quite a bit, which makes me assume that if you are using it rarely and not need ALL the quality possible a multipurpose device is a much better choice actually

mine was a multipurpose and the printer died too kept printing things in weird colours

You really don't have a scanner? Doesn't AJ have one? If so you could bring the stuff over on your next meet or something. If all else fails I guess you could borrow mine.
