Perma-vore/temp-vore
I know i'm not the most active in the vorish community, and haven't really been for quite awhile, though i still drop in and enjoy it from time to time. Anyway, lately, to me anyway, it seems that there's been an increase in what's being called Perma-vore, where someone's character is permanently "killed" by being eaten by someone else's character. To be honest, I'm not sure how i feel about this. Practically speaking, that's exactly what would happen if vore was done in RL. The one eaten would be killed off, no reformation, no redo, dead, period.
I know there's always been those that enjoy watching RL vore, animals swallowing other animals and those that prefer everything remain fantasy. Which seems in a way to be translating into this whole Perma-vore vs Temp-vore thing going on lately. I've enjoyed RP's where I've "kept" others inside me for prolonged periods, either via absorption, standard digestion, or merely holding them in some part of my anatomy. They were enjoyable and i love the idea of having someone inside me like that. But that's just me. I don't want to say that what you enjoy is wrong, just because it's not something I enjoy.
That being said, for those that are going the Perma-vore route, i suspect a lot of them are using "throw-away" characters, either ones they probably purchased through an adoptable style auction or just created purely to be discarded at some point. The issue most seem to come across though is when an "established" character is used for Perma-vore, one that has developed "relationships" with other characters. I've heard where such characters disappear, and those that enjoyed their company have no way to contact them, profiles being completely deleted and so on.
Now, the whole, reality vs fantasy thing aside. Why would you choose to permanently discard a character you've spent a time developing and so on? that's what i don't understand. Especially if you've got a large group of friends that enjoy your company? You're basically cutting all ties with everyone who knew that character, and I'm guessing, hurting them in the process. Now, don't get me wrong, it's your character, you can do whatever you want with it. I'm not saying otherwise. It just seems to me, that if you do decide to rid yourself of a character that's been developed, perhaps some sort of talk with those you're "leaving" behind should be in order, or else some way for them to remain in contact, even if its with another character.
I guess i'm saying, as far as Perma-vore goes, if you're thinking of it, perhaps try and think of how you'd feel if someone you'd gotten to know decided to do it, and disappeared completely. Consider how your actions affect not just yourself, but those you've spent time with.
Sorry if this is a bit on the rambly side, i really shouldn't try to post journals when i'm sleepy :P I'd also like to note, that i'm not trying to single anyone out or anything. I've just been noticing more and more people for and against perma or temp voring characters, and figured i'd through out a couple cents worth on it.

How dare you take pride in a character you've spent tons of time, money, and effort into building?
How dare you! >:V
No but seriously. Throwaway characters being made specifically for it? Sure, no harm no foul, because nothing of actual value was lost.
But going after characters/profiles that have thousands of views, dozens if not hundreds of friends? Or being that popular guy/gal, and throwing everything and everyone away for a cheap thrill? And even just a single picture or RP, at that? How immature can you get?
"But Leiton, it's their character, you have no say in it!"
Nope, sure don't! But I'll be damned if I'm going to be okay losing contact with a "friend" from some stupid role-play they had.
I've perma-vored a lot of throw-away, one-shot characters, but there are a couple, longer-lasting characters that this has happened to. However, when I perma-vore a character, it is usually only in the particular universe/chat room setting that they died in.
For example, my primary character was perma-vored in an IRC vore chat room. But, I created a new character to use on there, and I still used that character in another vore chat room, elsewhere.
I do not ask to have a major character perma-vored, but if that's the direction an RP takes, I don't declare it null and void. I enjoy the realistic aspect of an RP, where at the end of the day, the predator has the final say in what happens to the prey (where possible). One caveat I do make is that the predator's description must state that they are possible of doing perma-vore (generally soul vore) to their prey. I don't want some predator with no powers whatsoever, suddenly saying "I also digest your soul". I don't accept making up powers on the spot, just to do something like that.
Now, in my case, what I enjoy most about perma-voring an established character, is the emotional impact it creates. Vore becomes boring when you know the character is just going to reform, with no consequences to the act. I'm not denying how much fun vore RP scenes are, or how different preds do make each encounter unique. But just the fact that there is no emotional impact when everything is always safe. But when fate takes a cruel turn and kills off a character, it can feel like a ton of bricks hitting you in the chest. It's a very powerful moment that sticks with you for a long time.
It was also mentioned where the pred basically takes over control of everything the prey used to have, profile pages and so on, which can potentially lead to all sorts of other issues. I think this is a bit extreme, but this seems to be one of the worries behind the whole Perma-vore thing. Basically pred A eats and Perma-vores prey B. B had a profile page, which is given to A. Now anyone wanting (or thinking) they're trying to get ahold of B instead are sending messages to A, this potentially could include private information that should've remained between B and someone else. Now this is just a worry that was expressed to me, and again, I personally have not come across this situation.
This part here is just my personal opinion on things:
I feel that there is a bit of miscommunication going on as to what permavore tends to mean. In my eyes, it is different from the "Oh, just slap together a character real quick for this scene we are about to do". To me, creating a character just for use in one single scene should be called 'Fatal Vore'. When I think of 'permavore', I see it as taking a long-standing character, who has been around anywhere from 7 months to 5 years, and killing them, for good. No use on other websites, no more art, no further stories. I feel that people are failing to understand the concept of Permanence versus Fatal. The difference (Again, just how I see things here, not claiming it as the end-all be-all of it) is that fatal vore is just scene-specific (the character dies, the scene ends, and the next scene has the character back and good as new), whereas permavore involves a complete termination of the character (the character dies, the scene ends, and from then on the player is not allowed to do things involving that character anymore, at least in the public light).
I'm currently in the process of commissioning artwork with a close friend of mine, who is 'permavored' over on F-list. I'm admittedly a bit scared that SOMEone will comment on the submission when it's posted screaming "You can't get artwork with him in it anymore, he's been PERMAVORED!"
To clarify, I am not trying to be snobbish or holier-than-though about my stance on the situation. A lot of my opinions about it are based on the experiences with death that I have dealt with in real life, hence why scenes involving characters being killed for good (just for the scene or longer) always bother me immensely. My reasoning is that this is a fantasy world I have created a character in, where I can use him to do ANYthing, even completely disregard things that I hate, which is why I never do things involving death in any art or roleplays.
I've had people tell me on F-list "Well if you hate permavore so much, why do you look at it?" to which I calmly reply that it's difficult to avoid something when you simply go to look at someone's profile, and they have, in bolded text, "PERMAVORE VICTIMS" right in the open for everyone to see.
I'm not aware of any "perma-stomp" kinda corollary, either. When macros stomp cities or micros, I've not come across anyone wanting it more "permanent" or "serious", but I would assume traditional vore, by definition, is more enjoyed with same-size type encounters, so I may be making an assumption here, but I kinda assumed that "true vore" as it were was always very one on one and personal, not one guys versus the universe kinda thing.
Anyway, it's an interesting situation you point out, and I agree that it would be pretty sad to permanently lose an online presence over it, but...I guess it's part of the sexual appeal. It's like I know a guy (ahem) who if you ask me, just gets off on actually making alts. That's actually his fetish, making alternate personalities and playing them. I think it's a pretty big insult to him to even joke about it or expose his alts. Of course, I'm kind of a dick so I kinda do anyway, but... :)
