On the one hand, I totally agree that it's their money, and they can spend it however they want. On the other, I just really can't imagine an adoptable that I'd pay that sort of money for. There are perhaps some popular, established characters in the fandom that if their owner were going to sell them, and I had that sort of disposable income I might buy for such a high price, but there's a ton of art out there of the ones that I'm thinking-of.

Yeah, that I would get as well. YOu get art, the fame of the character, the time spent with the character, it has emotional value. But some adopts are really just an hour of work. Maximum. And there I can't get it either. I mean, if one has enough money, go for it hehe =D

like people frown upon reselling a LOT more over there, and some people even say things like if you violate their ToS they can take the adopt back from you, even if you don't agree to a refund

Ugh, that's yeah. Different. Well, copyright law(US's) says that the artist never give up their rights when they sell designs, but I think that's just a shady thing to do. Claim back something you sold? Nah, would never do that >-< People can resell my designs as they please, as long as they don't take more as they paid. *shrugs*

But yeah, I just sat in front of my screen with these eyes -> OO as I saw that. It's really like a famous brand, a name. But kudos to these artists! But I would get bored if I only draw the same thing over and over again hehe x3

$1k will buy a nice full color comic or a short animation... Spending that much on just an adopt seems pretty wasteful.

Mind you, I've never had trouble coming up with decent character designs, so who knows.

I almost feel a bit bad for the artists selling the $1k adopts though. If they start to rely on the money and then interest turns elsewhere and they become yesterday's news, they'll be screwed.

I hope that won't happen, for their sake, but yeah, it could happen of course. I myself just wouldn't be happy to draw the same thing over and over again, just with differen colours, patterns we =I

I heard a Pokémon card sold for 10K...the world is full of people willing to shell out ridiculous amounts of money for soemthign not worth the amount it sells for. I wouldn't spend 1K on an adopt even if Leonardo Da Vinci was resurrected and offered to sell me one for that much.

Know that feeling, yeah. I mean, the pokemon card has some value, because it won't get printed anymore and all that, but an adopt? Well, no one will buy it from you later. Not in RL that is =I (Except the artist will be the next da vinci^^)

I've seen that on DA before. I remember browsing through someone's journal that they had posted of adopts and other critters. One of them was really cute and I really liked the design but they were selling it for $600...it wasn't even a unique base or anything just colors slapped onto the same lines they always used. It had maybe 1 minor difference but that was it. I get people wanting to sell their art for what it's worth but the adoptables thing really gets me sometimes. I just can't at all justify spending that on a character that's just a cookie cutter design :/

Nah, I totally agree that you shouldn't undercharge yourself. But thing is, it's hours spend/price. I mean. If you sell a traditional drawing, it usually costs more than a digital one, except! if you give over the rights, which is usually not done with adoptables.

I agree that people should take value in their work, and price it like this, but 1000$ for an hour of work, non shaded adopt that comes as a base without any physical good or the rights on the picture itself? That's too high for me. That's just fame-based brand buying, which is of course okay ^^

For me was it always easier to sell stuff in RL btw, since there aren't many who compete, as you said, so you can charge more. I also think there's a different between an adopt (except for commercial use, with rights) and a full illustration. A full illustration is worth hours and hours of worth, and there I can imagine paying a way higher price. Adopts? Not so much (and I do them every day haha ^^)
