I have been writing up a science fiction nation called the Republic of Humanity, and going into great detail with it's civilization and sub-cultures.
The Russian Federation was forced to play peacekeeper when china collapsed under the weight of it's own economy, the two became The Eastern Federation. When Walter Reed and the World Without Gods party rose to power in Europe they began a purge not seen since the second world war, targeting religious peoples within Europe. many Eastern Europeans fled to Russia while western Europeans fled to the US. the resulting influx boosted both nation's economies.
Instead of expanding outward America expanded upward building the first space tower, they also launched the Freeedom Star which prevented nuclear weapons from being used (due to hacking this included their own) Iran was pissed off, believing it was another star wars style bluff. in an attempt to win back their population (which was rioting at the time) they called America's bluff. the US was not bluffing, and a good chunk of the middle east was destroyed. the Federation saw the writing on the wall and their economic development was geared toward the coming war with Reeds Europe.
Reed did eventually turned his attention outward, attacking both Canada (where England's government in exile was) and the Eastern Federation. a second patriotic war was fought. the US lent it's support to Canada.
The Federation came into conflict with the US over alaska, some generals believed they should take advantage of the distraction and take back Alaska and it's Oil reserves. (fossil fuels were being phased out but plastics and other items needed it) the result was a quagmire that made the USSR's Afghanistan look like a cakewalk. most of the US citizens resisted, and they were surprisingly well armed. Part of the justification for this attack was that the US now that they had a cheap and easy way to get into space, had established Moonbase Athena and claimed the moon as US soil.
The three way war went on between them for a long time. When a number of South American nations tried to join the federation the US responded less politically and more violently. South America became the battleground between the US and the federation. the US had learned from it's mistakes in the terrorwars how to successfully keep these nations under their command. They began encouraging these Nations to apply for statehood. This sort of backfired, the nations of South America and North America discovered themselves near equals in the Senate, and the US found itself hopelessly outnumbered in the House (more people in south America than the US). The American Republics were formed as a result. After others saw this the Federation lost it's political edge, and all of South America as a result. However the positive relationship the South and the Federation shared transfered to the newly formed American Republics and a treaty was signed. The Federation left The Republics and their pacific holdings alone and both focused on The Union (Europe+Africa) the Republics liberated Britain while the Federation kept them occupied in the east. the resulting backlash from discovering the "detention camps" in Britain was enough to break the WWG party and the Union self destructed as a result.
The ROH formed in the aftermath to deal with reconstruction of europe's shattered infrastructure, their UN style methods and unbiased view helped them gain support. Unlike the UN they were effective in combating military and economic threats. Thus they eventually replaced the ineffective UN as the forum of nations. As Humanity expanded into space the ROH was given jurisdiction over colonization efforts (it could not be done by one nation alone, the US proved how hard the moon was, now imagine Mars...) it has developed into the new Galactic authority for mankind.
now a century after it's creation one of the colonies named Mariopssia is putting it's values of tolerance, peace, and unity to the test. maripossia was an attempt by a political party to prove Humanity could thrive without governance. The colony developed well, then they discovered how to rewrite their genetic code with just an injection. this began a downward spiral as people tried to out modify one another to get the edge, or relying on modifying their genes instead out of lazyness (why work out when you can give yourself muscles with a single injection, why study when you can engineer yourself smarter) the republic was forced to use military intervention on it's own colonies for the first time in it's history.
Not all the genetic damage could be repaired, and due to lack of technology that far out on the verge the results were less than satisfactory.
Anthro's were born, the republic was quick to head off the issue, offering them citizenship and a single free ticket to anywhere within the Republic itself.
The Russian Empire
It's actually a parliamentary style government, instead of a king as the figurehead they have an emperor. It's the 25th century and surviving world war 3 changed people's outlook quite a bit. the Empire as a whole is nationalistic and proud of their accomplishments. The Parliament is a place where intrigue is constant almost to a Darwin level of eliminating the competition. they and the Chinese successor states parted paths soon after the end of the third world war, they still fuss and fight over Mongolia
other nations:
The American Republics: most of the Arizonia Desert is now occupied by the Captial City. otherwise it is ruled over by the same system that governed in the 21st century, though with the addition of the south there are many more political parties. The republics tend to be best left to their own devices but are one of the most ready to volunteer for space travel alongside the Empire (both nations have heroic spacefarers in their history)
The Republic of Greater Britain: the center of the galactic market, a combination of Wall Street and Switzerland, it still has bad memories of the camps. because of the strong furry subculture, many anthro's assumed they were also anthro's, they were wrong but the first few months were hilarious.
Nipon: japan and it's holdings
the Many Kingdoms: the successor states to china always fight with one another and the Empire to the north.
The Mid-east Tri-council: made up of Israel, Egypt, and the UAE they formed to counter the Persian Empire (what Iran evolved into before it exploded) they have changed much after the Terrorwars and WW3, becoming open and tolerant places (for the record mecca was caught up in Persia's death throes, so the Hajj has taken on a new meaning for Muslims)
Afrikan kingdoms: the newly formed states in africa are monarchies, but united by a democratic process when dealing with other nations. the anti-colonial paranoia has dissipated, and outside help has benefited Afrika greatly.
The United Koreas: one of the battles in rebuilding the world was dealing with North Korea who the world could no longer afford to feed. The ROH laughed at the threat of nuclear weapons, NK attacked the south, Russian, Many Kingdoms, and Nippon troops responded in kind from all directions.
Those North Koreans that did not surrender, die for their country, or die of starvation, were sealed in their tunnels when reconstruction began.
Somewhere under the Korean capital of Huansou there are 7,000 NK trapped in tunnels.
