College, Mass Effect, Dark Souls 2, Comic, Stuff
10 years ago
The term starts tomorrow. Anxious. Excited. Sad. I've spent the last three weeks or so doing nothing but playing the entire Mass Effect trilogy. I deserve a break— I practically spent my entire Summer doing NOTHING except working on my comic. Now that I'm getting back into my comic (and college), I feel just a tad rusty.
Beat the ME trilogy in 10 days. I binged. Hard. It was like chugging alcohol by the bottle (and I don't even drink). My sister gave it to me to play a long time ago, but I initially was just not interested. But man, when I got in, I got sucked in. It was a lot of fun! Enjoyed it a lot. The ending for ME3 was dumb, but I didn't know about the free Extended Ending DLC which cleared up a lot of the problems I had with an otherwise lame ending to a great trilogy. I started the series out playing as male Shepard, but his voice bored me to death. He felt so disconnected from most of the things that were happening around him. I was fascinated through the teeth. So I started off ME2 as female Shepard. Things panned out better.
And I hooked female Shepard up with Garrus. No regrets. Too cute together. I'm such a sucker for this kind of stuff.
I'm currently playing Dark Souls 2. My first death was falling into some water as I was trying to find out how to jump. Twice. Hmmm, reminds me of Mario games... Then I died the third time going the wrong way. Heide's Castle? Oh, not the right way? I'm sure I can fight these giant knights— nope. Well if I run passed the first one— nope. Well, I guess I can't sequence break and survive like I could in Final Fantasy 12. Problematic.
The difficulty of Dark Souls is pretty much like playing Monster Hunter. Not that different. Though I did hear the first Dark Souls was far more difficult. Though whether that was because of bad game design or bad skill from players (or both) is something I don't care too much for.
As for other things... If anyone remembers that Free Art thing I was doing, I've had this crazy idea that I wanted to do... but I need participation from other characters from other people to do it. It wouldn't have the same impact, otherwise. I think I'm crazy for wanting to do it, but I've never seen it done before. I've heard people usually say and tell me that "everything has been done before". So why can't I find anything like what I want to do? I'm intentionally being vague, because it's a project I'm not sure I want to commit to and I don't want anyone stealing my idea, if it is as unique as I say it is. It's a project with an overall positive message, but... I don't know. Do I really have the guts to go up to people and say, "I have this project and I want your character/OC in it. Would you like to participate?" Not really. Not at this time.

Dark Souls 2: Could have been better, first death was to the first encounter with the Pursuer, then the giant, then didnt die for about 10 boss fights. In my opinion Dark Souls 1 was harder, and no the controls weren't clunky. Other reason might be because I played it before the second one, but there is no way to find out. Although I do prefer the boss fights in 1, I did not miss the Bed of Chaos though; the only part of the game with mandatory jumping and the boss can knock you into the holes midjump, and jumping was NOT a good mechanic to begin with.
Sadly I cannot contribute any characters to your project because I do not have any.
Unless I fought The Pursuer too early. After I beat him, I fell off a ledge and found some ridiculously good armor. It's... possible... Apparently I went to the Iron Keep too early and I met the Flame Demon guy/robot/thing. I WANT to beat him, but... too OP. There's a Pharos Lock in the Iron Keep that releases some water... but what's the point? See what happens when I play a game blind? lol
I really don't like the jumping. I have already died several more times because your character force rolls after a jump. Gotten my poor guy killed that way.
Also, Heide's castle IS a viable alternate path from the beginning area. Theres 2 bosses there, one similar to Ornstein that leads to a dead end and a dragon something knight that opens up a further path. Thats all I really remember.
While I played the first 4 bosses several times, I only advanced all the way once. I do remember gargoyles though. Remember the pair from DS1? You fight SIX of them in one boss fight, yes six. I dont know if your playing melee or a caster, but just like DS1 and Demon Souls being a caster is sort of easy mode for some of the hardest boss fights. Heck, there are spells in DS2 that even eliminate some of the downsides to being a caster, and don't get me started on a hexer. If you like magic this game certainly does it well: having spells, miracles, hexes, and pyromancy.
For balance purposes they have changed a lot since it came out, like you used to be able to magic buff the moonlight greatsword and pretty much one shot everything, just had to beat the spider boss on a ng+ difficulty to get the soul for it. Or am I thinking of a spell? Ah well, youll get there eventually. I do highly recommend looking up the two boss soul blacksmiths, one you should have no problems finding, the other unless you activate the proper bonfire you are likely to only see her once, if you even find her home, and since the soul weapons and spells only consume the corresponding boss soul and souls, its rather easy to get the soul items compared to 1.
I did go to Heide's Castle first, because it was the most straight forward path. But I didn't know how to fight the giant knights. Only later did I find out that circling around large enemies is the best way to fight them. Learned this from dying so many times to the Pursuer. Strange how the best way to fight enemies is to be suicidal and get really close to them. Just like Monster Hunter. But at least all of the enemies I've fought so far don't have some dumb running attack. Haha!
Because this is my first time playing Dark Souls at all, I decided to go melee. Best way to learn how to deal with things, I figure. I had the same mindset going into Monster Hunter, so I figured that kind of mindset would help in Dark Souls. Is magic really that good? I was afraid that Dark Souls would be one of those games were magic is woefully underpowered and melee with a bit of range on the side would be the to-go option to handle everything. I thought that UP UNTIL I started running into the in-game evil phantoms. One of them was a mage and that was a tough fight. It and you make me reconsider my stance and I'm now tempted to make a magic-based character.
So you DO get to do something with the boss souls? Good thing I never used them. Then again, the game does tip you off on it. How long do I have to wait until I can do this? No, wait. Don't tell me! I'm determined to get that far. I'm having a lot of fun.
As far as magic being OP, that is mostly for boss fights, though the frequency of bonfires means you can use it on regular enemies as well. I recommend going strength based melee with some miracles mixed in for the first playthrough. Strength weapons are slower but hit much harder, and miracles give the choice for healing or damage so its a fairly balanced build for a beginner. The extra heals should give you a little more room for mistakes, something you will really want for some boss fights.
Mu favorite thing to do when a new boss gives me trouble, is to switch miracles to the damage ones and focus on learning attack patterns. Then after I dont die from stepping into the boss fight, prepare for offense and take it from there. You wont really have timings down until you've fought some bosses several times.
Btw get used to fighting the pursuer, you will fight a stronger one later, and at another point two at once.
