There's actually a surprising amount of truth to this.

'The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival' recounts the case of a wild Siberian tiger that over the course of his life had absorbed a number of shots from various firearms and gone on in relatively good health for some time. At one point, the author and one of the people in the story suppose, the tiger just gets mad at being shot at this one time and proceeds to kill and eat and armed man and walks away from the incident well enough, certainly nothing even approaching a fatal wound.

There was a bear called "Groaner" in Alaska that was eventually killed only to discover that the groaning was caused by bullets embedded in its skull. There were two calibers of billets found and they matched the calibers of pistols carried by a prospector who disappeared twenty years before.
