This reminds me of a puzzle

Facts:
- Laptop starts 50% of the time, more if from a "cold" state (meaning hasn't been used in a while)
- Works fine enough for a few minutes then the hard disk light stays on for a long time.
- If I use the DVD-R drive for more than a few minutes the computer will just stop recognizing it and the disc in it, even on subsequent boots.
- If the HD light stays on for a while the laptop gets hot.
- Eventually when i shut the laptop down it'll end up hanging in the middle of the process, not shutting down all the way o_O
- When it doesn't shut down all the way and I turn it off, most times the next time I boot it will hang at the "Gateway" startup screen.
- If it hangs at that screen and I press F2 to go to the BIOS menu it makes an angry BEEP at me and doesn't respond further.
- These symptoms disappear if i let the laptop stay off for a few hours.

or most likely..... your Laptop is depressed, downloaded a lot of byte-liums, and wants to commit suicide

i mean.. you have to start discarting the large things first.....
