I know there is a section here with pictures, but I apologize.. I have not uploaded the pics yet.. But I wanted to go ahead and put up the review. I promise I will update this when I can get these and more pictures of the "aftermath" uploaded either here on on my personal website.
So, I was lucky enough to bother AB Universe until they agreed to send me a sample of the XL space diapers.
I was very impressed, they were sent 2nd day air. I spoke with them on Thursday afternoon and I got the sample in the mail on Saturday morning. Of course I know that they will send the packs and cases regular mail and they will not arrive that fast, but I was impressed that they sent the samples so fast. I am guessing that it was because they are going to go on sale in a couple of weeks and they want to get as many reviews and opinions as they could before they available to the general public.
Okay, so on to the review. In the interest of full disclosure, even though I will release the review in one big post, I am actually going to review and test the product in two parts over two different days.
The first part will be a general overview of the product, pictures of different angles and features, and general opinions. Because of my schedule, I will not be able to actually try on the product and test it until several days later. I will review its fit, how comfortable it is, its absorbancy, and other general thoughts.
This review will be punctuated with MANY pictures to help illustrate my thoughts and give a better overall picture of the design and features of the product.
First thoughts- THICK. I am not sure how they are going to feel when I put them on, but they look pretty huge. They are probably not going to work too terribly well for walking around under clothing, but with the all over design. I don't think that is really the point.
The second first thought would be the design. There have been perhaps one or two companies that have tried any sort of all over design. I know the makers of Fabines have, and also whomever makes the Amour diaper, but as far as I know this is the first one to have both an all over design AND a color as well. I could be wrong, but this diaper is a first in many ways, it seems.
On to the pictures and some more specific talk about the look, features, etc.
<IMG_3257.JPG>
This is both of the diapers I got stacked as they came in the bag. Its a bit hard to tell because I have no point of reference for size, but they are quite thick.
<IMG_3258.JPG>
A side view of the diapers stacked on top of each other. You can see a bit of the very crinkly and quite wide landing zones for the tapes. Of course the diapers are plastic backed, with a thicker, louder clear tape for the landing zones, so I have a feeling that these will be quite loud when you have them on. You can also see a bit of the elastic waistband at the top. I have a better pic of that later.
<IMG_3259.JPG>
This is top view of one diaper by itself. The design is really cute. There are green aliens and UFOs, moons, stars, rocket ships, planets, and the space ABU icon. Even though its branded with its own logo, it isn't too overwhelming. It might have been nice to not have their own logo or have it less, but that is a pretty light complaint. It also would have been awesome to have something like the stars or moons or something disappear when wet, but I know that would really up the price and they are trying to keep these somewhat affordable, which I really appreciate. (PLEASE SEE MY ADDENDUM TO THIS COMMENT IN THE LAST SECTION OF COMMENTS)
<IMG_3260_JPG>
Side view of the single diaper. Sorry it seems a tad fuzzy. My iPhone4 doesn't have the best camera. Again, you can see the thickness, even folded. This is its initial fold, it has not been opened and refolded (they always look thicker when they are refolded).
<IMG_3261.JPG>
The diaper up on its side so you can get a better idea of how damn thick these things are. It also shows the nice overall design.
<IMG_3262.JPG>
This is the back of the diaper, showing some more of the design.
<IMG_3263.JPG>
The diaper unfolded, with the wings still folded up. You can see some of the quilted design of the inner padding, as well as the side gathers.
<IMG_3264.JPG>
Another view of the first unfold. You can see one of the two tapes for each side. They are very wide, and as with most diaper designs they have the blue undertape so you can refasten them once if you need to.
<IMG_3265.JPG>
The front view of the first unfold, which gives a nice view of the wide, crinkly landing zones for the tapes.
<IMG_3266.JPG>
A view of the diaper totally unfolded. As you can tell, it has leg gathers in the middle, and an elastic waistband in both the front and the back, so I am hopeful that this will be a nice, custom fit to each person's individual body. There are two wide tapes in the back that are set a bit high and a bit close together, so I am not sure how that will translate to how it fits on the body. I will have to find out. It is interesting, the middle has the quilted design but the front and back are just flat. I wonder if that will be a problem for a female like me or a guy who points up when he is padded.
<IMG_3267.JPG>
Another angle of the diaper unfolded. There is an interesting continuation of the inner liner right to the edge of both the front and back of the diaper. I am not sure that I have seen that feature in other diapers either. One would think that something like that would really help, especially with bowel containment, but I do not intend to test the bowel containment abilities of this diaper, sorry. That will have to be left up to another reviwer.
<IMG_3268.JPG>
Close up of the quilting in the center. I am glad this seems to be quilted and not that cheap fluff you get in some diapers. I am hopeful that this means that I can wear it for a while without having the trouble of bunching fluff that comes with some cheaper diapers, but again I will have to wait and see.
<IMG_3269.JPG>
Close up of the elastic gathers on the middle sides of the diapers. It looks like it comes up pretty far, so I am hoping that will help with containment. I have a problem with wetting while I sit, either because of the weight of my body or the lack of quick absorbency, that almost every diaper leaks out the sides. I am hoping that this will be less of/not a problem with these. We shall see.
<IMG_3270.JPG>
Inside close up view of the elastic gathers, it gives a much better view of how high they come. You can see the smaller inside gather that most diapers have as well.
<IMG_3271.JPG>
View of the front elastic band, and you can also see what I was talking about with the inside gather that literally goes fron to back and down both sides. Unusual and very interesting.
<IMG_3272.JPG>
View of the back elastic band. Its adorable how the all over design really goes everywhere except the absorbent part of the diaper. Makes it very cute.
<IMG_3273.JPG>
The outside close up view of the tapes. They are pretty wide, I would guess that they are about as wide as the other premium diapers out there. As I said before, the placement seems a little odd, a bit high and fairly close together, so I am hoping that wont cause leaking/fit issues. I just noticed, there is a big dipper in the design too. How cute!
<IMG_3274.JPG>
Another close up of the inside absorbent layer.
<IMG_3275.JPG>
Sorry, it's another slightly blurry picture. This is a close up of the landing zone. You can see how wide it is, and it is super crinkly when you rub it. These are not stealth diapers for sure.
<IMG_3276.JPG>
Inside view of the tapes. Wide, with the blue double tape for re-taping if needed. The tape are wide but they seem a bit short. I wish they had been a little longer, especially with larger people, it helps to be able to pull that tape a litle further to get a little better fit, but I will have to see how they work when I try them.
<IMG_3277.JPG>
Bonus pic- I decided to try to re-fold the diaper and see how I could do. Not too well. That of course makes it look thicker than it normally would when it comes folded from the factory, but any way you slice it, it is a very big diaper.
So those are all the pics for the initial review, before I try it on.
A few last thoughts.
I love the all over design, I think the inside absorbent part looks like it will work well, but that will be determined soon. I like the gathers at the sides and the elastic in the front and back, I am hopeful that this will make it fit well. I did give it a dry run without taping it up, and I am more than a little concerned that they still look pretty small for being XLs. They look like they fit more like larges on other diapers. But I am going to reserve judgement until I actually try them on and see how they actually fit.
Several days later and I am FINALLY getting to try them on.
First impressions:
The fit is alright. They really don't feel like XL size, they fit like a roomy large. The overlap of material at the top is probably only a few inches.
The tapes are nice and large, and they seem to attach well. I had no problem with putting them on and making them stay.
The fit seems to be fine. It doesn't seem extra tight, but it seems like it fits well. It is THICK. I did not put any stuffers inside because I want to test its absorbancy, but with a stuffer or some other layer, one could very easily make this too thick to close your legs, if that is what you like.
ONE WORD- LOUD. I had a feeling that it would be loud and crinkly, and I was not disappointed. There is no way that you could hide that you are wearing a diaper, because of how thick and crinkly that it is. And honestly, with an all over diaper like this, this isnt the type to go out with and hide under your pants. This is the type to stay at home, have a little day, and show off your cute padding.
It is just as cute on as it looks like when unfolded. It is super adorable, and the all over design makes you feel really really little.
After use thoughts:
I wore it about 10 hours.
Wow, I am quite impressed. I drank a lot on purpose to try to test it, and I think I gave it a pretty good run.
I did not get any leaks after multiple wettings. Now to be fair for whatever reason tonight there were no larger "floods". Most of the wettings were smaller ones. But still, to wet while sitting down and not have it squish out of the sides is very good. That is a HUGE problem with what I normally well.
The material in the middle was not the cheap fluff, and there was absolutely no splitting or settling that you get in the cheaper diapers.
Normally because I am female, I soak the bottom part of the front, it tends to leak forward, and I leak before I can get a good front to back soaking.
But because these held well and soaked up well, I was actually able to go pretty much front to back, a rare feat, and something that was very much appreciated.
And I want to make an important addendum to something I said above. I thought that they did not have anything that faded when wet.
I WAS WRONG.
The large green spaceships that are all over the diaper, one of the more prevalent designs on it... THEY FADE WHEN WET.
This means that it is QUITE obvious when you are wet because there are a lot of indicators that will fade out.
That is even more reason to not wear them under pants, just wear them out at home so your mommy or daddy or caretaker can see when you need a change.
Final thoughts:
I am not sure when they will go on sale (pretty soon it sounds like) and I am not sure of what the prices will be, but this is an excellent what I would call "premium diaper".
By that I mean not one that you would wear every day (most likely too cost prohibitive for most, and too thick to go under anything but very loose pants/shorts), but this is a great diaper for when you have a day off and want to lounge around and play video games or color or play with legos all day. It could also be good in conventions or nursery sessions when you are in a room and you have someone who is taking care of you and will need to check you for when you need to be changed.
Diapers are like many things. You get what you pay for. And you can tell with these that they are just made better than the cheap diapers that you can find out there now. The price is higher, but you are getting a good fit, excellent absorbancy, good tapes, an adorable design, and even wetness indicators all over the padding, from front to back, which is a very unusual feature.
Are they perfect? No. I wish they were a little longer, and I wish the wings on both sides were a little wider, so you had a little more control over where the tapes go, The tapes are close together, and because of that you have a bit of a narrow window where the tapes sit north to south.
But the features in this diaper FAR FAR outweigh the little nitpicks that I have about it (and other than the length they are very very minor nitpicks). I think overall they did a great job of listening to what us- the consumers, want- and giving us an excellent product.
I definitely recommend giving them a try when they come out.

But how does thickness compare to the Bellisimos i sent you last yr?
