Okay everyone! I am working on a research paper for a college class and the topic I chose is online aliases/personas. Please take a moment to reply to this survey.
Why would you/do you use an online an alias/persona?
Do you on a social website use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?
Do you on online gaming use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?
Do you on an artistic website or blog use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?
What do you think the purpose of using an alias/persona is?
What is the benefit of using an alias/persona?
What negatives come from use of an alias/persona?
Do you look up to your persona as a goal to reach?
Do you use an alias/persona to be anonymous?
How do people using an alias/persona's act in your opinion? (on the internet no one know's you're a dog)
Do you act different when using an alias/persona or the same?
Any additional thoughts?

2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. The purpose of having a persona is to reflect different aspects of yourself onto the alias. It often represents the best part of you, as mine does, and to be able to see how that character acts in certain environments.
6. The ability to disassociate your own self from it, and to see and do things you may not have thought of before. (This can be dangerous if used badly.)
7. The very same ability to disassociate from you. You open yourself up to not caring about others thoughts because what you are talking about is all fantasy.
8. Yes, in many points.
9. No, it serves as a way to meet people and to better know them after they get "approved" during interactions with the alias.
10. There's a 50/50 here. Half act like sane, normal human beings, while the other half have no social skills and do things that are very inappropriate.
11. I do act differently. I get, as they say, into character. I embrace that character and become him, and do so when appropriate. Its mainly for fun, and to meet other people.
Alias are very creative expressions of one's mind. They show a lot of who that person is in life, and can be a very healthy hobby. As with all things, you must moderate it, or else the character you made will and can easily take over your whole life, and leave you trapped in a fake world that offers nothing for you in real life.
Now that I finished this survey, do I get a cash reward? XD
Do you on a social website use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?: Always
Do you on online gaming use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?: Always
Do you on an artistic website or blog use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?: Always
What do you think the purpose of using an alias/persona is?: Choosing what represent us, being anonymous, presenting ourselves in the best possible light, etc.
What is the benefit of using an alias/persona?: see previous answer
What negatives come from use of an alias/persona?: When others are using one it can be hard to know if they're trustworthy or not.
Do you look up to your persona as a goal to reach?: Not really, though maybe I should in some regards.
Do you use an alias/persona to be anonymous?: Yes, though that's not the only reason.
How do people using an alias/persona's act in your opinion? (on the internet no one know's you're a dog): Depends on the person, some are complete entitled a-holes and others are perfectly decent persons. Anonymity surely let some act more freely than they would otherwise, I'd say mainly shy people and those of more aggressive nature.
Do you act different when using an alias/persona or the same?: Pretty much the same, except I'm more social/outgoing than usual when online.
Any additional thoughts? : Nothing (for now at least)
Good luck with your class! If you need anything else feel free to hit me up.
Yes, I do.
Do you on a social website use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?
My FB name is my real name, but my profile pic isn't me.
Do you on online gaming use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?
Yes, I do - both.
Do you on an artistic website or blog use an alias/persona for your profile name and/or icon picture?
Yes, I do - both.
What do you think the purpose of using an alias/persona is?
One of the main purposes of an alias is to be anonymous, the other is to represent yourself to others as you want and also to be recognised as the same person if you use the same alias everywhere.
What is the benefit of using an alias/persona?
*copy-pastes the previous answer*
What negatives come from use of an alias/persona?
That you don't know who the other one is, especially if it's a generic alias like for example gamerboy337 or xX_CatsInHD_Xx. People who have such names usually don't really care about what they do. There might be exceptions, but that's my experience.
Do you look up to your persona as a goal to reach?
Not really. I'm myself in my alias (mostly), so that's just me.
Do you use an alias/persona to be anonymous?
I use the same alias since about 18 years now on very different pages. Can't really say, I'm very anonymous anymore.
How do people using an alias/persona's act in your opinion? (on the internet no one know's you're a dog)
That's actually pretty different. The people with generic usernames very often act, as I already mentioned, as if manners haven't been invented yet. They seem to feel very anonymous and act that way. The other group of people, the ones with aliases that are more names, where you feel that they put some thoughts into it, act just like normal people to me. I think there would be no difference if they would use their real name.
Do you act different when using an alias/persona or the same?
No, usually not. I'm myself if I use my real name or my alias doesn't change it.
