Confusion, Looking for Meaning

So over the past week, I've been dealing with a very frustrating situation. I won't go into details, but when someone wants to shatter everything you've worked for for years in order to satisfy a personal, trivial grudge based on their own lies and false accusations, it's rather upsetting and not at all pleasant. I've told a few of my closest friends and my mate, but I didn't wish to spread it around due to the severity. I believe the situation is over with and in my favor, though my reputation may have been damaged by this assailant (I don't know, considering the overwhelming support I received from the people who would have lost respect for me). Shame, but the past is in the past.
Here's where my confusion comes in. Tonight, my accuser brought in a parent. Typical stuff, he gave a long list of credentials and the powerful people he knew, spoke his piece, and then I spoke mine. In the end, before he left, I offered to shake his hand. I'm a lefty, I've been that way all my life. He extended his right hand, looked at me as though I'd spit on him, and said "I don't do left hands." Now, I had to shake his right hand, at this point there was no denying it. But here's the thing, when someone refuses to shake your left hand, is there some kind of hidden meaning there? Part of me is offended because I didn't choose to be left handed. I wonder if it is related to the nature of the false accusations I was defending myself against or if it was religious based. The only other person I can ever think of who looked at me as though I was a freak for offering my left hand was from the exact same religion. Can anyone offer clarification here?

That's the most logical reason I can think of.
A casual "oop sorry! I get so used to using my left that I didn't even think. my bad." and usually the situation is diffused. A little humility, even when lying through your teeth, can actually go a long way.
Also, I hope that little twirp got kicked in the nuts. Religious people, on average, are fairly easy to get along with if you filter your thoughts before they leave your mouth, but that kid..... ugh.
When I was in scouts we were told to shake with our left hands because it was a more a representation and awareness of sorts.
Story goes In medieval times most combatants where right handed and used there swords in said hand. Left was your shield shaking with your left meant you where still on guard and could easily defend yourself if your opponent you where shaking with tried to attack at that moment. so next time that happens they are the one in the wrong.
BTW I am right handed and I offer my left to shake.
