Do people do this?

Try to claim art or a character design as their own work and creation in an attempt to steal it or guilt someone into giving it to them?
Cos I had someone note me on DA claiming an old ref/design as their art and a design they and their friend spent 'weeks developing'. I created the character long ago as a fursuit idea and I recall someone even stealing it and recoloring it on instagram. The person's icon/ID on DA has the character I own drawn but honestly anone could've whipped that up super quick to LOOK like they use the character. Their gallery otherwise has one photograph not relating to the character and that's it.
But I just wanna know, is this something people sometimes will do to try and get a character? They said their friend helped them design it. I told them their friend probably copied my work and design and didn't tell them. If they argue that isn't true then I don't know what to suspect could be the reason other than them just trying to get the character? Iunno, anyone face a similar experience or know someone who has? :o

honestly i know how it is i lost one of my closest characters in my life and it was me basically to some dick that claimed it was his and oh ya it was my name of my account so yes they do do that sadly.

oh yeah people will do anything to get free art :/ dont let them screw you out of your own design. that's so dumb. that's why i dont touch DA with a ten foot pole.

I definitely won't let them! X3 It's just an odd way to try and get art or a character cos it's so obvious who created or owns the original XD

I have had all my Dutch Angel Dragons copied and tried to over throw mine. But they only posted a few photos, then stopped when they released that I didn't care. But I have had people claiming Akuma belongs to them. Im like "UHHH I won him at auction"

Yeesh D: People tried to even copy Rio? I've had some of my older Sunny art traced in the past and even older HTTYD stolen but that was mostly it. Never have I had someone attempt to steal a character or design, so it's weird cos it honestly makes no sense since it's obvious who the original creator/owner was XD

Yeah that's the thing about tracers, art theft or impersonators. If you don't really show it bothers you they typically move on to somthing or someone else. It's all for attention.

People literally will take the signatures off the art pieces and claim it as their own >.> I hear rumors about deviantart being especially bad when it comes to art theft.
