100 years later, and a few million deaths later, driving is almost a right.
I would never expect general consumers to ever wield the responsibility of flight with the same respect. But that's just me... complete lack of faith in humanity and all D:

Finally it would also have on board maps to mesh with its GPS that would also include buildings, terrain and landmark data. It would simply not allow you to fly into a building or mountainside because it would know it was there on the map based on your heading and altitude even if the object was obscured in fog or clouds. Between GPS, a good dead reckoning system and ground radio beacons (which are already used by private pilots to navigate BTW -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-d.....ional_beacon). All this would combine to handle any possibility of problems with GPS signal interference. The traffic control system would also keep the computer aware of storms, turbulence and other weather phenomena and tell it what the safest altitude to fly at was and prevent you from doing something stupid like flying into a thunderstorm. In the case of an unresponsive pilot or other serious problem, the craft could be remotely flown by someone on the ground to land at a hospital, police station or other safe location should there be an emergency or issue aboard.
Its a complex system, but its something we have the wherewithal to work out with todays techonology.
Also, I note that the car does the flying, not the person in the driver's seat. This means they could set up specific launch/land areas, flight paths, and so on to keep them from hitting each other. You wouldn't be able to just fly to anywhere in town, you'd have to drive. But for longer trips, flying from launch/land point to launch/land point would be the way to go.
(is a megawatt so hard to believe? your computer's power supply is nearly 1 megawatt)
I have a design in my head for something I feel is way better, but it doesn't drive at all. Its meant to be a personal craft, with computer assisted flying so any joe can fly it, but unlike this car it can land just about anywhere. Not just on a street or a runway, but in a field, mountain side, or with pontoons even on water. It would be VTOL of course assuming the take off system I had in mind works. Its airspeed would be closer to that of a passenger jet and its The idea would be that you would use it to fly to your far away destination and then take ground transportation from there, be it a rental car or public trans.
The bonus for my idea is it would fit 4-6 people comfortably and would also make an excellent air ambulance or transport for special forces team :D
Course the main obstacle to my idea is I don't know if my design would be practical or not, its kind of a radical design c.c I might have to try to draw it out sometime. It might not even be practical or possible. But I do have a strong feeling that it would be better for someone to come up with a personal flying craft that is not meant to drive, but just meant to take you between far away destinations, focusing on speed and range and cargo capacity and then you would take ground transportation at your destination. Most people wouldn't even need to own one, most would call an Uber like service to meet up with an air taxi based on this craft that would take them where they needed to go. It would be better than an airport because you wouldn't be tied to their schedule. You would call and the service would dispatch a flying vehicle to the nearest park and fly type space. They drop you off in a similar such park and fly nearest your final destination in whatever city you go to. From there you take a bus or maybe they have a car waiting for you that can take you, your passengers and your cargo since it won't be a flying car and will have the room for your needs.
