Door to door

So the other day we get someone at our door asking if we're looking to have our driveway resealed and our lawns taken care of for the season as this company is in the neighbourhood doing just that. Right off the top I'm skeptical. I've been suckered in to this before. We have this company patch and reseal our driveway the driveway at our old house and they did such a crap job it wasn't worth the money we paid for it. I was so pissed...
I told my wife not to agree to anything until I talked to him and saw what he had to offer. The next day he came by again and he walked and talked me though the process that they do and they make sure that we agree to the work before they leave. I talked to my wife again (who feels the same as I do) and we agreed to try them out. They're going to come by and seal our driveway, patch up the cracks and rough spots in June or July.
I hope I'm not going to look like a fool again. I'll let you know how it works out. What would you have done in this instance?

I hope you haven't signed over anything (especially a cheque). Find some way out of it ASAP. Seriously GTFO out of it.
The best way you can check on their legitness is to ask if they're licensed and insured. Most /actual/ construction workers and handymen are. If they are, then they're probably legit.
On a side note, I'm saddened that America has become the kind of country that you can't trust the people who live around you anymore. There is no easy way to fix the problem, but it still saddens me.
Porches and rocking chairs. No joke.
Done properly, (which most people doing it don't do), it does make your driveway last longer. However, the cost of the sealing is about the same as the increased amortized cost of fully repaving more often. This does not take into account the damage to your flooring/carpets can can be caused by tracking in the coating, (a problem that can last months).
At the other end, you have the quick spray jobs that make your driveway look a bit prettier for a few months while actually shortening its life.
I will NEVER make a door-to-door contract. If there´s something to do, I call someone another one I ask can recommend. Same with my I-Net-provider: I asked a guy I know what provider he uses and if he´s happy with it, and since he is, I made the contract (I hadn´t I-Net before), and I didn´t regret this ever since then.
