Thoughts on Star Wars VII *SPOILERS*
If you haven't seen Star Wars Episode VII yet, then this is your last warning. MASSIVE SPOILERS ahead.
Just watched the new Star Wars movie and it was great! It lived up to the hype that it was building over the last few years. By far my movie highlight of the year. Here are some of my thoughts on the movie:
-Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you Disney for not ruining the movie and franchise with a bad first step. This could have gone the way of the Prequels and spiraled out of control, but it didn't. I give most of the credit to J.J. Abrams
-Also Kudos to J.J Abrams and the staff for keeping the plot of the movie secret for so long. There's a special place in Hell for those who intentionally spoil movies like this. (i.e. Michael Sam)
-No stupid characters! No Jar Jar's in this one. Big step in the right direction.
-The old cast in this movie really meshed well with the new guard. The acting was on point by everyone, the new characters were refreshing, the old characters were strong. Bravo.
-I really liked Fin's in this movie. It's something different than we're seen before. Daisy Ridley's character was fun, but it's almost mirror image to Luke from the OT. Maybe that was the idea, but it worked nonetheless.
-Wasn't a huge fan of the actor that played Kylo Ren. He didn't seem like a menacing enough Sith. He was too whiny/pretty boy to me. Reminiscent of Anikan from the Prequels, just way better acting. In my opinion at least.
-Love the plot twist with Han's death and Kylo (Ben) being his and Leia's son. Going back to a previous point, I love how that was a well kept secret up until the movie got released.
-Did not like that fact that we got a third 'Death Star'. This movie was in a lot of ways like episode IV. Maybe that was the intent and in a lot of ways it worked. The mega weapon was old news though. I think that the movie needed a different overall threat. I also didn't like the ex machia either. There was a lot of convenient escapes, acts of nature, and buffoonery that kept characters alive. Also Captain Phasma was really overhyped by everyone prior to the release. Phasma had a really small role in the movie. That may have been a distraction in the trailers or she'll have a bigger role in movies to come.
-Loved/Hated what they did with Luke. Loved the fact they kept him out of the picture to develop the newer characters. Hated that we only saw literally 30 seconds of him. Not saw AND heard, just saw.
-Finally, I'm extremely optimistic to the future of the franchise and movies. So much potential. Cannot wait for 'Rouge One' to come out a year from now.
Those are my initial thoughts and opinions. What do you think?

FA+

Rey is far more secure, competent, and self sufficient than Luke was in ep IV, I think. Don't feel like she's a dreamer searching for something bigger in the future, she just wants to make sense of her past. That being said, I DO think that there's a darn good chance that she's Luke's daughter. I almost suspect that Daisy Ridley was cast in part because of a more than passing resemblance to Mark Hammil, which was highlighted very well in the closing 30 seconds of the film. She turned out to be an excellent actor as well, fortunately, but I do think that can't be a coincidence.
As far as Kylo Ren goes, I think he's perfect. The character is NOT a sith. He's not even a full dark jedi yet. At best he's a very strong apprentice, and in that light, I think he makes an excellent villain. In the past star wars movies, the villain has always been older, fully adult, and very sure of their motives. Kylo's menace comes exactly from his insecurity. He feels like the type of person who suddenly blows up and takes a gun to his school or workplace and starts shooting it up for no good reason. This is a thoroughly modern villain, and I think it works very well. He honestly scares the crap out of me, cause you can never tell when he's going to be reasonable or when he's going to destroy everything around him in a fit of uncontrolled rage.
But yeah, very good movie. :)
I do like the conflict of the Kylo ren character, and you're right he's not technically a sith yet. I don't really see the student rampaging through a school metaphor in him, I see more of a little kid that when he doesn't get his way and throws a fit. I'm not saying that idea of Ren should have been different because it's certainly different from what we're used to, but I just think the actor seemed like a Hayden Christiansen type. Not my favorite villain in the Star Wars series, but not me least favorite either. Favorite being Vader (Can't really beat him) and least favorite being General Greivous and Dark Side pre-suit Anakin. Darth Maul would have been my favorite had he been developed more.
No Jar-Jar. Definite plus. Hell, even the Ewoks, while cute, were also effective. I mean in the battle of Endor they contributed the homefront advantage and guerilla warfare. Jar-Jar was a gimmick and an annoying one at that.
Have to say that maybe we have 2 possible Jedi from the new cast. Rey is definite, but Finn has some indication of Force prowess. He's not the prodigy Rey is, but resistance to conditioning and being able to hold out against Kylo Ren that long shows promise. Maybe I'm reading too much into it or there's enough ambiguity for a reasonable twist...
Have to disagree about Kylo Ren (Ben Organa-Solo) being reminiscent of Anakin from the prequels. Ep1-3 Anakin was LAME any way you slice it. In fact if Ben had been visited by the bland Hayden Christiensen version of Anakin , I couldn't blame him for going to the dark side. ("Wait...I'm going to turn out like THAT? Screw it, I'm over to the dark side!") But Kylo Ren at least had some semblance of being tight and controlled.
The new Death Star...well it seems repetitive but it's also kind of the MO of the Empire and the First order...one big honkin' superweapon that can deal an ultimate blow to whole planets. You kinda see it in the emblem of the Empire and the First Order...the radial star of the Empire resembles the convergent beams of the superlaser. The First Order emblem resembles the firing bore of the Starkiller.
I just hope Hammill actually gets some speaking roles in the next movie...I mean seriously, his career has largely been VOICE ACTING!
