This review has SPOILERS.
So this is your last chance to turn back.
If you do not want spoilers to Star Wars, do not read any further.
Ok, well if you are still reading, I assume that you have already seen the movie.
And it's gonna be pretty long, so bear with me please.
So, I guess I have to address the elephant in the room. Han Solo. Apparantly Harrison Ford had wanted Han Solo to die in the original trilogy.
Well. I guess he got his wish. When they started to talk, I had a bad feeling about this (pun TOTALLY intended). I have heard some people say that it wasn't really a good way for him to die, that he should have had a more heroic death, but I have to disagree. He has gone past all of that. He is much older and wiser now, and while he obviously can fight when he needs to, he doesn't go out of his way to pick a fight. In fact he was actively avoiding it, which was what he had always done, even in the first movies.
As soon as he got lightsabered, I literally yelled out "Oh come on!" I was thinking it might happen but when it did, I STILL wasn't ready for it.
And Kylo Ren. There were so many rumors. Many people thought he would be Luke, but one of the first thing he ever says proves that wont be the case. He was obviously looking for Skywalker as well, so the question was, who is he?
I was afraid that they wouldn't tell us until close to the end. But we found out about halfway through, which was nice. And wow. I was sure that he would be related to one of the main characters, but who? I am actually kinda glad it was Han and Leia. That makes sense. So how long has he been bad? (prolly not too long, as he looks fairly young) and what turned him bad? (We still don't know). And I love that his name is (was?) Ben, I assume after Ben Kenobi.
And the other gorilla in the room- the similarities between this movie and the 4th movie (sorry, its always the first movie to me, so I am gonna call it the first movie from now on here.
Some people don't like that Abrams did that And I see why people could say that, maybe thinking that its a lack of creativity.
But I don't see it that way at all. The force has always been cyclical. It makes sense that things have come back around again. There is a TINY part of me that was VERY slightly taken out of the moment when I thought "Oh, I see what part of the first movie this is like." But then something would happen that would draw me right back in right away.
Despite what I said above, I LIKE that they made it thematically like the first movie in places. You can see who is playing what characters. Po is kinda like Han (even though he kinda has elements of Luke as well, with being a good pilot and a major player in the rebellion. Rey is definately like Luke. Finn, I am not really sure where he fits. He has some elements of Luke and Han, but honestly for the most part, he is his own character, which I like.
I love the character, I am sorry I dont remember her name, the orange alien they meet, the one that has Luke's lightsaber. She is kind of like Yoda- a wise voice and a way to point people in the right direction (albeit without any force).
I really hope that Finn doesn't turn out to be, like some rumors think, Lando's son. I want people to be their own characters, they dont all HAVE to be related to each other.
On that related note, I am not sure if I want Rey to be, as again some have speculated/rumored, Luke's daughter. Again they don't ALL have to be related, though it WOULD make sense since she is strong in the Force. So I am of differing opinions on that, but we won't know anything for a while anyways, so I will let it play out as it will.
JJ Abrams- only a few lensflares (thank you!) He did a GREAT job. I had faith in him as a director, but this was a BIG job to take on. There is a LOT of lore and a LOT of fans who would pissed if he got it wrong. (Looking at you, Lucas.)
Oh yeah, I almost forgot (HOW CAN I FORGET??) Luke Skywalker.
So, I was a bit worried that he would only be there at the end. And he was. I was really hoping we would see a little bit more of him. By then end of the movie I was thinking "Are they gonna shoehorn Luke in at the very end?"
It felt a TAD shoehorned, and it would have been nice to have him say something, but then again, it still worked. You can read the emotions in his face, and that was all you really needed.
So overall, it was an awesome movie. Obviously if you are reading this you have seen it already, so I don't really need to tell you.
I saw it in 3-D and I was glad. I am hoping that I will get to see it again. If I do I want it to be in standard so I can compare the two.

Two people. Simple mountain top. No CGI. No Green Screen. No dialogue. Simple gestures yet such a powerful scene.
Overall I enjoyed it, but yeah if this is just Jedi Babies with every main character just the sibling of a main character, that will get old real fast.
I don't need to hear that Poe's dad is Wedge or Finn's dad is Lando or Rey's dad is Luke or some stuff like that.
Just keep them as new characters, let baby Solo be the only sibling, the rest just completely new and interesting characters.
I really loved what they did with Kylo Ren. It's so nice to have a villain who is more of a petulant asshole than the simple yes-man that Vader was. You can tell that he's trying to be independent but feels shoehorned by his role in the Force. He's rebelling against everything, even that. (He wields the Force like a bludgeon, in ways Vader never did. He's clearly only half-trained but thinks his power and relation to Vader are good enough) It was such a fresh take on a Sith villain. Speaking of Kylo Ren and what he did to Han Solo...Chewbacca owes Solo a life-debt, which he subsequently failed, and -must- take revenge on Ben. But can he do that, knowing that's Han's son? I have a feeling Chewie will factor significantly into Ben's redemption arc. To that end also, I am hoping that Rey also turns out to be a Skywalker, as it would give her own conflict with Kylo Ren similar pathos to Luke vs Vader.
Finn is my new favorite character. I am hoping as you are that he is unrelated to the main cast, but I would also like to see him turn out to be Force sensitive, or perhaps even a Force Adept. he seems like a wildcard character, and that's a good thing.
I also liked how the First Order are basically a radicalized cell of the old Empire. They are completely fanatical, yet lack tangible goals. With the Emperor dead and the Empire crumbled, their crusade is one of revenge. Finn's tale shows how they are using intimidation, fear, and bullying to build their forces. I loved loved LOVED how the First Order was portrayed as being not at all dependent on the Sith. The Sith in this film are members, and high-ranking ones, but the structure of the Order's war machine is entirely independent from them. It will be interesting to see exactly what role in all this the shadowy big bad plays (other than being Kylo Ren's mentor). Interestingly enough, Han (and I'm assuming the rest of the heroes/galaxy) already knows who he is, but we the viewers don't yet.
I disliked how little the film explained of what happened during the massive time gap between 6 and 7. Some, but not all is revealed, and there are obvious threads left hanging at the end of 7.
I too, thought some of the obvious callbacks were unnecessary, but the parallels are different enough that Episode 8 will be going into uncharted territory. In a very real way, I think we needed Episode 7 to do this, considering that the last movies to release were the prequel trilogy films that left a bad taste in everyone's mouths.
