I would suggest getting a (animal grooming kit) WAHL shaver and kit from a pet store. A little spendy but it comes with everything you need. 1 Clipper, 4 razor guards of assorted lengths, Scissors, comb, dvd, operating instructions, blade oil and a case to keep it all in.
There isnt really a length thats recommended to cut as long as you dont go below 1/4 an inch, its more or less personal preference on length. I would recommend just messing with the different blade guards on scrap fur til your satisfied with the length.
