Fanbases: My Little Pony and Undertale (for example)

reeeee
So, Undertale came out back in September. People are bitching now about how the Undertale fanbase has gotten so huge and so active despite there having been so many other games that came out at the same time that don't command nearly so much participation, and are wondering why people who played those games aren't nearly so enthused about them as they are about Undertale.
Because those games didn't have engaging storylines or characters.
The strengths of MLP and Undertale is that they have characters that are relateable, likable, and well-written. People are drawn to stories. Some of the best games that we remember strongly are ones that have excellent writing and characters that we can connect with. Emphasis on "connect." If you can connect with something on an emotional level, you're going to like it more. Can you honestly say those other games were something you could personally connect with?
People whining about fanbases are, well, whiners. They're people who feel like they aren't being allowed into the clique so they get butthurt over it and whine about it and say they don't get it without ever actually TRYING TO SEE WHY PEOPLE GET THAT WAY ABOUT SOMETHING. People who whine about fanbases are twice as obnoxious as the most annoying fans of any fanbase, because at least the people in those fanbases have reasons to be obnoxious; they're obsessed with something because they have an extremely strong emotional attachment to those things, whereas whiners are just whiners. "Waaaah I don't get it so everyone else must be annoying waaaah." <- That's what it sounds like. I'm not a fan of MLP by any stretch. Frankly, I think the show and characters are grating and shallow...but at the same time, I have to confess, they're well-written and do have established personalities and traits that others can clearly become attached to (and obviously have). So I don't baaaawwwwwwwww about the fandom. What are they actually doing that's so obnoxious? Leaving comments on youtube videos? Drawing pictures? "OH NO, HOW FUCKING ANNOYING, I CAN'T AVOID THAT, IT'D TAKE TOO MUCH EFFORT FOR ME TO CONTINUE MOVING MY EYES ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE SCREEN!!"
The fanbases don't ruin ANYTHING and if your perception of a creative work is REALLY spoiled by people you are NOT being forced to interact with (seriously, seeing fanart on the front page of Deviantart or whatever is or seeing comments by them on threads in places like Youtube or whatever is NOT you being forced to interact with them), you're not looking at the creative work itself for what it is; you're looking for reasons to bitch about people themselves; you're looking for an excuse to try to be edgy; you are being more annoying than the fanbases you think so annoying yourself.
So, shut up, sit down, enjoy the creative labors of others, quit judging other people who like it, and if they really do bother you that much, you need to get some REAL fucking problems going in your life to worry about, seriously.
