Personally I consider it art, however I can definitely see where some people would just be like "well he drew a line"

To me I feel like certain colors give off certain feelings, so when used together, if gives a mixed emotion. Sometimes I can feel how the artist felt while using said colors. Honestly I wish I had the ability to express my emotions through colors and simple shapes. I think it takes a different kind of art skill to do so, and abstract artists have my respect for doing so.

I love abstract art. It brings out....emotion and thought. And the amazing part is....its not the same for everyone. Each and every person has a different feeling, emotion and thought about it.

YES! I love when I see a piece and I interpret it completely different than someone else does!

I have great respect for them but when they draw a single line on a canvas and call it a snake, that's where I kinda flip. (lol Picasso)

Honestly, it's like they had some little 2 y/o finger paint it and then call it a friggin' masterpiece. "Alright sonny boy, let's put this in the local art gallery and sell it for millions." Le derp :P

I am going to be honest here. I hate abstract art. Before everyopne else hunts me down and burns me at the stake. Hear me out. I know if you look closely you can see something there something the artist is trying to convey to you.

I can't not due to the lack of imagination nor not looking long enough. I see colors is all. weather it be a line or splattered colors I dont see it. I dont see the appeal. I am not saying they are not talented. They have to be to have there works shown at galleries. Yet you will not find me there looking at them. If I was rich I would not buy there stuff. not to be rube but I put something on the wall it wil be something you can see and understand instead of saying look at those splattered colors.

In the end this is about you the viewer What do you want to see what do you like to look at. I myself love to actually see pictures. I feel it is cheating when artist use adbstract art to define themselves. To push other artist out of the way with there actual art (IMO)

Not everyone is going to have the sam oipion on this but to be open to new things is always good. I am not.

I guess when I look at art I dont wnat to guess what the artist was thinking but enjoy it. Not say why is there a line on this white canvas?

Now I am not an artist my self I am a writer I use my words to create a world. Yet a artist has to show his/her views through the canvas.

Yet I do not like riddles especially ones that have colors splayed all over it. The artist might say it is there view of a messed up world. I see a mess of colors.

I understand your view and I used to see it that way too, actually! But you asking yourself 'why is there a line on this white canvas?' might be exactly what the artist wanted you to think! If art sparks a response at all, whether it be positive, negative, or even confusion, makes it successful in my eyes. Maybe they wanted to challenge the definition of art as a whole and show that there really is no definition of art at all. The fact that they bring these questions and stuff forward is what makes it so intriguing to me :D

Also it does not help last time I went to the gallery for one of these abstract art showings I simply said I dont get it and was berated for it. It did not it's cause when people started to rip on me saying I would never get it. If you want others to like something you don't make them feel inferior just because they dont get it. I guess at one point I did sorta liked it but now after that I dotn think so. It felt like elitism.

But it's nothing really to 'get'. You take from it what you want. If you see a mess of colors, then that's what it is to you. It's not a wrong opinion. In fact it's completely valid. xD

That's actually how I still feel. If I stare at for a long ass time, I'll eventually begin to see what the artist may or may not be trying to convey. I just simply don't understand abstract art. Personally, if I'm going to draw something, I want don't want people second guessing.

ALL art done by the person who made it is real art doesent matter how simple it is if his art sell well then thats proof its real art right there XD

Personally, I can see just about anything as art. Houses are art. The forest is art. The human body itself is art, in my opinion. But the work of the person you're speaking of is art as well. There are many many forms of art. I personally love abstract stuff. The more abstract the better. Lol.

This is how I see it too, everything can be classified as art! There is no set definition of what does and doesn't qualify as art.

Agreed 100% lol. One person above said they are not an artist. But they mentioned that they express themselves through writing. I consider writing (whether it be stories, poetry, songs or whatever) to be a form of art. :)

EVEN the songs and poems that don't make sense or have no meaning are art to me.
So why would a painting be any different. xD

We seem to be on the same page. Haha! ^w^ I enjoy art in all forms. I don't necessarily enjoy every art piece, but I enjoy all forms of it. I happen to be addicted to music. I am constantly looking for more music to listen to. And I certainly view music as a form of art. An amazing one at that. :P

Sames! And of course everyone has their tastes, abstract art isn't for everyone the same way that rap or rock n roll isn't for everyone either. Or you may enjoy a rap song or two, but you mostly listen to pop. You may like a few abstract pieces, but prefer to buy/ look at landscapes!

I absolutely love abstract art, but not enough to see it as worth the hundreds, thousands, or millions of dollars that some people do. At least, not the type where it is just lines or splatters.

If someone puts a single line on a canvas, I will still call it art, but I will also see it a waste of a perfectly good canvas for such an insignificant line. But then there is also that annoying part of me that goes "But what if that insignificant line symbolizes the human race, and the canvas is the earth... and the humans are wasting the earth's supplies.". Which by a small chance COULD be what the artist meant to portray, or it could just be me overthinking it trying to find some logical reason or meaning behind putting a line on a canvas....

But if it is multi colored lines covering the whole canvas... well then I want it, and I don't think about it, because the colors make me happy. o3o No thinking needed. Just... comfort from art.

I will always prefer art that has an actual clear meaning to it though, but life would be boring if there was only one type of art!

I like your view on art. I personally would buy one if it caught my eye. But not for millions??? Kudos to those who can, though. I appreciate any support of artists and creative works.
I like how you said that a single line could symbolize the human race and the canvas the earth. Thats what I love about abstract, it means everything and nothing at all at the same time. It depends on how you view it with your mind, not your eyes. xD

I think one of my favorite forms though is like an artist whose name I cannot spell or remember. D: But he draws abstract humans and scenes, usually fairly morbid... Always with fish. To this day I have not been able to figure out the meaning of the fish, whether they be shown with the humans drawn as glass bodies filled with red fish flowing out, or a girl surrounded by fish in what looks like wonderland. o3o The type of abstract where although there is a clear picture, it has a hidden meaning that forces you to think by incorporating various colors and shapes.

Though the best thing about abstract art... if you want some for your house, it is easy to make something similar to one you've seen to hang up on your wall and proudly say "I can arts like the pros!" XD

Fair enough, but a toddler can't know what colors go well together or what part of the canvas to paint on to give the whole piece some harmony! So in a way it is creative, maybe not AS creative as other art. But also consider that if all someone does is draw the same exact thing from an existing photograph that they look at without changing anything, that's really not creative either. xD

There seems to be a divide, some people can see and interprete abstract art, others can't? I sadly can't seem to interperate most of it but I still think it is art, everything is art really.
Have you seen freckles, birthmarks and scars on someone? Vitiligo and other conditions like that? It's a shame society is so cruel to people with conditions like that, because to me it's amazing. They have all these unique markings that are theirs! Like the stripes on a tiger or random patches on a dog ^^

I think it is art. But I find it very boring to look at. I don't really see much emotions with just colors and shapes like some people can. If I go to a museum that has abstract art, I usually need to bring friends or other people to make it interesting. Then I can have them say what they see in art and how it is different with what other people say they see.

I won't lie it's going to depend on the piece. And i'll even admit you know i could be too narrow or closed minded to see something from a more simple piece. But on the usual i don't think its art. I say it depends on the piece though because there are some where its ambiguous and not just "I threw things together find a reason to call it art." And i can agree its art but if it comes off as someone threw things on parchment or what have you chances are I'm not going to give it the time of day because it just doesn't feel like art.

This is a debate that I've had with several friends and practically all of my family members. and I understand people that don't like abstract art, after all it's not always the most visually appealing style.
but to me, art is a reflection of life as seen by the artist. each piece shows a bit of the artist and the world around them in equal measure.
I love abstract art ^_^ it's like a rebel art group that says "yeah, I know the rules. But I'm gonna do it this way." I can understand why some people don't like it, but art doesn't have to be liked to be art.
Art is about more than popularity, art is about more than just the outcome of a piece. Art is about the process and intent behind it.
So I understand people that don't like it, but to say it's not art at all is like saying a movie they don't like isn't a movie. just because something doesn't appeal to a certain audience doesn't change what it is =3

personally, I don't see ALL abstract art as art, but most I've seen i do
but when it is just a line drawn through some color, such as orange, or used to decide two (I.E. two shades of a color) I don't really think that's really art :/ more like practice, in my opinion
then again, i still usually like it :P

Not pure abstract. 2 year old throws paint, it's not worth anything, 40 dude throws paint, it's priceless. Enough said. Nothing bad about abstract, but the fact that some dude who threw paint on a canvas is lauded as "fine art" compared to say, a Rafael or Donatello then there's something wrong here. Most common argument I get is "well he was the first person to do it" and " it shows his emotion" first ones a lie, some two year old threw paint on paper Lon before he thought of it an the second one, why isn't the two year old famous? Obviously the child is expressing its infant emotions onto the page, there is no difference.
