600 is honestly being really generous LA is almost the cost of living in NY but a wee bit cheaper
look to have about 1000+ a month for living there

Too Much, trust me

WAY too much.

the cheapest place we found was in long beach. at the time it was a one room studio for 650.00 then they upped the price to 725. the place was called Paradise Gardens. it wsn't......Bad.....the studios are perfect for one person or a couple that gts along well. [jt and i did fine]

has a pool, tennis court, basketball court, onsite laundry and roaches. Lets not forget the roaches.

Aside from that it wasn't...bad-ish

It also had an underground garage, but it was such a pain in the ass to bring your stuff to your apt.

There's pros and cons to the place. But....yanno...not the Worst place to be.

What ever you pay in housing you're going also going to pay out the nose in taxes. Also, CA has some pet regulations you should look up.

California is incredibly expensive. There's lots of benefits (weather, basically everything cool happens here) but you pay for those benefits. $600 for a shared room is definitely possible. Possibly even with utilities included. At that price, you're going to be on the outskirts, most likely. It's gonna take you at least an hour to get anywhere, probably 2-3 in traffic, each way. So there's 4 hours of your life gone, to driving, each day. Moving closer raises the cost. If you are helping with utilities, $50 for electricity, $60 for internet, another $60 for cable, and probably $50 for water/trash, split among your roommates. $200 a month for food works as long as you are fine with processed food, shop cheap, and never eat out. Sandwiches are going to run you about $10 a piece, so that's 20% of your weekly food budget.

So yeah. If your car is fine, you can afford the gas, and travel time, you can live in LA on $800 a month, but you might want to look into how much reserve you have, if, say, your car breaks down.

I live in the Bay Area, which is more expensive, but more awesome. I love it here. There's a ton of awesome stuff to do. Boutique bread pudding stores. Pinball museums. Gaming conventions. Blacksmithing lessons. A curling rink. But you pay for it.

As for the no car thing... It's going to be REALLY hard to live in LA without a car. Befriend someone with a car quickly. You could look up bus routes now, to see if it will take you to the grocery store, and stuff.

The trade offs make it worth it though. Even if only just barely sometimes.
Cal is a wonderful state to live in for so many, many reasons if you can just afford it.

I didn't know you were moving to LA. It's true, that area of California is not ideal. It's bigger, noisier, and has way too much traffic for its own good. There may be a lot of job openings but picture LA as New York. It's that run down. Plus all the homeless people and bad neighborhoods, you'd be better off in a different city.

normally I would prefer to not move to LA, just that as an animator its where most of the jobs for my industry are. unless i get closer to them Im at a disadvantage to get them *sighs*

im sorry dear. i know working as an animator will be hard. if it is your passion, still go for it. just be mindfull of the surroundings and what friends you make
