Yeah, they tweaked characters like Blind Al, Weasel, Bob, and Ajax/Francis to fit the story more. Yeah, they tinkered with the backstory and such to make it a more audience-friendly approach. Yeah, it boils down to a generic "Origin Story" plotline we've all seen before. Yeah, it's a Romance. So did they pull it off?
Yeah, they did.
Actually, I'll go not-so-far-out-on-a-limb here and say RYAN REYNOLDS pulled it off. I really cannot envision ANYONE else pulling off this character, and the love for the character really shows through. It carries the movie through some of the more rote parts of the story. Also, going with a hard R rating actually helps this in the long run. A PG-13 version of this story would have played like a Disney Afternoon cash-grab musical. Speaking of music, there are some great musical choices in this film - too bad only a handfull of them appear on the soundtrack. You missed an opportunity here, Fox - soundtracks can be BIG $$$ if done right.
Half asleep here, so sorry for the scattered thoughts, but all in all a very fun movie. Now pardon me, I have to go cuddle my unicorn...
Yeah, they did.

I wonder if they're doing that intentionally. It seems like a trend these days where they'll load up a film wit some awesome songs and then the soundtrack will contain orchestration or only a handful of the popular songs put in the film. Perhaps they figure that the soundtrack will sell without their having to get extra licensing for those songs?
