Self-publishing project
Hi all,
I am doing some research in regards to self-publishing and would like to know if any of you have experience in this area?
In particular, here is information I am interested in gathering.
1. The U.S Copyright Office Submission Process. Have you gone through this and what has been your experience?
2. Are obtaining ISBN Code(s) truly worth it for a small publishing firm, or should I use the default Blurb ISBNs?
3. Whether establishing a LLC is worth it, or whether this is a better strategy for a maturing sole proprietorship.
4. Your thoughts on print on demand fulfillment using vendors such as Lulu or Blurb as well as lead time.
5. What price points are reasonable to you for a comic book (24 page estimate) Trade Paperback (100 page estimate) or a Hard Cover coffee table style art book (100 pages). All products will be full color and full bleed.
6. Would you be interested in a Captain Freeagle comic book based on the characters you have seen already?
7. If you don't answer these questions, the communists win!
Thanks!

What do you think about question #5? What would you pay for any of these items if they were available?

I remember speaking with Chu and she was kind enough to take time to discuss comic production with me as well as look at some of the material that I had available.
At this time, I don't have illusions of turning this into a large revenue generating project and this is being funded by discretionary income. My goal is to do as much as I can myself to learn about the publishing and marketing process that goes into making a successful project. You could say that this a pilot project to see if future productions are feasible. It is also a test to see what I can do once I have the right platform.
I look at comics like xkcd/ Penny Arcade and say: "If they can do it, why can't I?"
As an optimist, I think I can make sales on the side if I promote the product right and have something compelling to show with the right price point.
If you have any feedback along the way, feel free to let me know. I always appreciate feedback regardless of what it is. : )

The rest? Well, I'd like to know, too.
At this time, I'm resisting posting up PDFs or ePUBs due to piracy concerns with the digital files. I'd like folks to have physical paper in their hands that will last many years.

We'll see. I'm still trying to get art done.
This will be a huge project in graphic design and a definite learning experience, but I am very very excited to work on this.
All I'm doing right now is a submission PDF to the copyright office along with an 8x10 proof book for my records. I'll obtain an ISBN code and publish at a later time when I have more content to show.
Figuring out price points has been a huge challenge, but I think I have a printing solution that will be competitive.
Good luck on the RPG! If you haven't already, check into InDesign for your publishing method. You can do easy conversions to PDF for printing purposes later and their system makes it easy to calculate margins.
