Just go around and talk to the villagers, do their requests when asked if you feel like it, go fishing or catch bugs to get money, collect stuff for the museum and so on. Once you unlock the island, you'll be able to get a lot of money fast xD (there are guides with tips on how to do so), but if getting money fast isn't your thing then just take things slow.

I've been playing it for a while actually ^O^ Did quit for a few months, I wonder if my favorite villagers left... Only thing I hate about this game :C

Yeah, villagers will move in and move out kinda at random.

If you walk into a villager's house and there's nothing but boxes, you can talk to them and try to convince them to stay, but that requires checking up on them regularly.
