$10,000 - $20,000 planned for part-time programmer

By Jasonafex, a month ago
If you have been following my Twitter, I have been posting small previews of some blender stuff I have been finishing over the last few weeks. These characters, models and animations are for a clean, 3D Fire Emblem style game I would like to develop next year, after the completion of our current projects.

Due to the surprising success we've had with modelling and animation so far, It might be a good idea to get an early start on programming, as it has always been our biggest hurdles for game development. We have very talented programmers behind the helm of Amorous/BBS. However, their free-time is limited to the occasional weekend due to full-time employment obligations. While Patreon is a godsend to make these games a reality, it is too unreliable to allow one of these guys to reduce their hours from their real jobs to work on it in any serious capacity. The average programmer earns 60-80k a year, whereas we can only provide $9k a year based on our current funding. We have two programmers in an attempt to alleviate the bottleneck, splitting that income to $4.5k per person.

We are finally in a position where we can start updating Amorous again, however I would like more active development for our 3D game when the time arises. This is why I have considered funding the game with Kickstarter over Patreon. We would be able to provide evidence of hard numbers upfront, and provide our programmer piece in mind that they will receive a stable income so long as they can keep up with our demands.

A 30k total budget would allow 10k for programming. Any additional funding, such as receiving 60k would allow us to double that. I would like to keep expectations low however, as there is no guarantee of excess funding (Or getting funded at all, for that matter. However I'm optimistic based on our past numbers).

If you are interested in this opportunity, please note me after reading the following criteria:

• Evidence of past experience/Portfolio

We will be creating a turn-based engine from the ground up. Anticipate inventory systems, stat progression, attack percentiles, modifiers, tile-based movement, dialogue etc. It is crucial potential programmers have ample examples of meeting this demand based on previous experience.

• Ample free-time

We need to be able to realistically assign hours per week to the game. Due to this, we are looking for those that are either part-time or those that can survive financially receiving $850 - $1650 a month (10k-20k).

• Willing to get the game to a demo-state before starting our fund-raiser

I am a strong believer that asking for money before providing a tangible, playable example of your game/product is a terrible practice. This is why we have never created a donation option until an early beta is released. We are happy to write some legalese entitling you to your hours once funding is received. However, all staff must be prepared that meeting our minimum milestone is not a guarantee, we may not get funded.

• Familiarity with Unity or able to quickly adapt

Due to my own past experience, Unity is platform I've grown familiar with, and have various assets invested that may aid in the production of the game (Such as re-using our custom dialogue system, Unity store assets and it's compatibility with Spine/Blender). While it is possible to develop in another engine, my personal preferences lean towards Unity if possible.

If above sounds appealing to you, whisk me a note! If you have any questions, please ask me in the comment section so others can see them.

Hmm maybe you forgot another zero XD.

In all seriousness though would you have to live in the US for this? I have a friend who might be interested in this (I'm not guaranteeing though) however we live in the UK.

I don't even live in the US, so no.

Oops. Sorry XD I shouldn't have assumed.

I remember when it was all FORTRAN and COBOL. *sighs* Damn you, progression. =P

My girlfriend is a COBOL programmer. There aren't too many around anymore. They all retired.

Mmhmm, a few companies here and there across the world still rely heavily on COBOL but it's such an archaic language and hard to code, not many bother anymore. On the bright side though, it was a very powerful and reliable language. ^^

She's working for one of those companies. She's maintaining code that's older then her.

No, I used to work for the city. ^^ They used COBOL all the time. I remember helping make a program to create mailing lists.

These are still a thing. They run many of the nuclear power plants still running today from the time in which the languages were commonly used.

  Well, that's disturbing.

Hahaha it does sound disturbing, but like, theres nothing wrong with an older language, its just runs differently.
It all funnels down to the same 1's and 0's

This could be interesting. What programming language would you require? Or does Unity use its own unique scripting language?

I've worked on some stuff in Unreal 4, but the jump to Unity shouldn't be a problem. I've done a few things in C and C++ (The most recent being my own first true "game engine" which was a C++ raycaster using SDL that had some interesting features such as quests, inventory system, mission system etc.). I also have a good few years of experience in the industry, though not strictly programming (Quality Assurance, so some programming on and off to build tools to check, monitor game stats etc).

I've poked around, if I recall it can both import and use C# function calls through their includes or make use of Javascript scripting for interpretation of smaller interact events. A lot of it is triggers and entities in game with callbacks and a interpereted main loop over your main class since the base engine is still a wrapper controlling the hardest part of initializing the window and handling cross platform stuff.

I could use a stable job, but there are far better people like you with better resumes and history. I have little experience in a ton of categories, I dabble too much which lets me understand and able to work in and with anything, but serious work some of the advanced mechanics are just untempered. :P

I'm guessing it'll be made with C#. Unity also has a form JavaScript, but don't believe it'll be used.

I would absolutely love to get in on that. I have a degree in game design too. It's from ITT though. Not sure how that strikes you.

Sadly, after a horrible case of disillusionment, I've fallen horribly behind on my technical skills. My comp is outdated as well. If you can help me get/find reference materials and ways to play with it, I'd do my best to refresh my skill sets and make something to showcase them a bit.

  If I was more advanced in my programming skills, I'd definitely send a note about this. ^^;

Cant wait for the game! I really would want to help but the time management is the part that would be a struggle for me. Lots of random events has been coming up and that would suck too be working on a game and something comes up and cant work. And how is Amorous going? I have not been able to check as my computer has been in repair for a while. Did v.4 come out

I just finished a programming course and made a small game in Unity. I wouldn't call myself qualified, but if you ever need an extra hand, I'd be more than happy to assist without charge.

I would love to be on board, myself having over 10 years of programming experience in the game industry at companies such as Rockstar and Bethesda, but I just don't have the time. Perhaps down the line if there's a period where I'm in-between jobs I'll lend you a hand.

I do know two people who do have the time, but I'm not sure how comfortable they are with the furry community. I'll look into it.

It's difficult to strike the balance between free-time and experience. Most who tend to be hard working and talented don't stay un-employed for long

I'm going to go ahead and get in touch with those people I told you about, but I can't promise they'll be on-board with this particular project. These are former colleagues who, admittedly, I haven't kept in touch with for the past few years, so it might take a few days to get a response out of them. I'll see what I can do though.

It’s a really neat opportunity and it’s also cool how you’re looking within the community for someone. It seems like it will be a long term project but I’m still looking forward to seeing it completed.

I also sent a note with my portfolio and resume. I’m just a small fry, but It’s great seeing other game developers show up here on FA.

Been doin programming for a while, but primarily on my own time from my interest for it. Recently actually been messing in video game development with some fake 3D effects and dynamic lighting as well. I have dabbled a bit in Unity but would need time to get more used to it, but if you only need someone for the coding and not really the 3D modelling then I can probably do that. I don't actively use Unity and haven't really had too much actual WORK experience as a programmer, so I'd assume you'd want someone a bit more reliable for the role but I'm offerin myself is all :3

Out of curiosity. Will you eventually be looking for Story(board) writers/helpers, and all of that later down the line? Or do you plan on doing the story and dialogue all on your own in that regard?
All the extra help would work really well, in my personal opinion! But figured I'd ask.

  jasonafex

#link     Posted: a month ago

We have no current plans to hire for writing positions.

Hmm. Understood! Though I think it'd be a good idea to think on it. For such a big project you have planned, it'd be best, in my personal opinion!

So any planned consoles or hand helds its gonna be on, id like to beta test it if possible i can even do live streams via pc i got enough power on that.

  jasonafex

#link     Posted: a month ago

This one may have a legitimate chance of reaching consoles, due to it being an actual game rather then a porn simulator. Unity is pretty good at handling multi-platform stuff, we'll see late in development.

Shame, the only thing I do not have is free time... And I have no idea where I will be in one year from now. However, if you ever need someone to write some shaders for you, do not hesitate to contact me. I enjoy making them so much ! :D

Hmm, I've been programming for 8 years now, but I've never touched 3D games or Unity, Wish I had.
