---Social Issue Art History Project---
So for my Art History II class, I was assigned a project and I chose to draw about a social issue and I had a whole bunch of topic to choose from that have had a load of controversy and impactful issues behind them. Out of all the issues that were out there, the topic of rape hit the hardest.
Why did I chose the topic of rape? Well there was a horrendous thing that spread on Tumblr and eventually the news like wildfire about a pro-rape group wanting to do a mass rape on many different groups of individuals, excluding white, American Christian males. On top of that, I hear often that rape is a crime that is severly under-reported and often times misunderstood in the sense that the victim 8 times out of 10 gets blamed for it, whether they blame themselves or several people in their surroundings blame them (family, police officers, peers, co-workers, etc.). It's been something that has been widely talked about by my father and it has become a scary issue for me to look at the statistics and how low they are in terms of reports.
I wanted to know your opinion on this subject and should I post my work about this to make a statement and make it known that this crime needs to be looked into more and should not be brushed off as something for people to blame the victims of it. I ask because I know that this is a very touchy subject for many and I wouldn't want to scar anyone if I were to post it just out of nowhere. Even if this is a school project, I don't wish to cause any harm if this has affected anyone that you know or even yourself.

A lot of them don't report it because they think it's their own fault. With how they dressed, where they went, or because of people around them. It's sad, but it happens.
If you want, you can skype me, and we can discuss the issue. I think it's good that you're willing to tackle something so extreme.
the simple matter is, the victims were often groomed into being victims etc. so the chances of being reported are lower at the start and because they are ethnic or religious differences, the ones doing it dont see themselves as doing anything wrong because they do not follow uk law.
then comes the next issue, quite a few of these girls were extremely bad tempered etc etc and blamed the police, cooperation was impossible and witnesses etc were unable to be used.
the police themselves had a very hard time actually arresting people because nearly all the suspects were of none white or none british origin and often included large families and this meant they would end up being declared as racist. The force was also suffering a lack of resources to investigate the issue due to ongoing legal problems regarding the hillsborough disaster. (which personally was the fans fault, they shouldnt have gone without a ticket, or smashing up a pub owned by my friend's dad and stealing the booze)
At least I am more informed in yet another spectrum of this topic. Thank you for telling me about this.
Nope, I do not support rape, at all. And this is a subject that should be addressed, because it has other factors.
"being groomed" was mentioned, and there ARE cultures / religious factions that do actually support this.
Rape is also a rather unhealthy 'weapon' used in war. (And should be considered a 'war crime' in my opinion.)
...Then there's porn...*coughs nervously*...
Let me be clear: It makes me VERY uncomfortable seeing that in there and more than a good bit squeamish when I see that being played out.
...No, the woman does NOT enjoy being roughhoused like that, and Im very sure that has to mess her mind up after its all said and done, no matter how 'consenual' it was supposed to be in the video...no...just, no.
Bad enough porn itself is still considered a 'gateway' to rape - though there are those who enjoy the regular porn and havent raped anybody and dont intend to do so anytime soon (i.e., yours truly :P)
Nobody should ever deserve a horrible situation like that at all and it is possibly the scariest shit known to human kind next to war. The fact that there is rape porn fucking grosses me out and it makes me think poorly of the people who are in complete support of this and even go so far as to host or participate in these things. The fact that there are some sickos out there trying to make excuses for their rape habits pisses me off and it makes me feel awful that there are people like this that exist.
And considering how often I have heard of rape in art history, yes depending on the setting it should be considered a war crime. It is a fucking disgrace that this would ever be taking place. The "being groomed" sounds highly suspicious above all else and on top of that the fact that there are some religious people/groups that justify/pardon rape is possibly the sickest shit to churn my stomach. I have heard the confessions on the Internet of some people telling family members about their rape stories and the shit that I heard was enough to make me angry and cry.
"Looks like you're no longer a lesbian."
"You were asking for it. No one told you to wear that short dress."
"That's what you get for being open about your sexuality."
"You're a guy, you should have enjoyed the sex that woman was giving you."
"Grow a pair. Why didn't you fight back?"
Those phrases are just a few examples of what I have come across for my research and it makes me want to beat the crap out of the insensitive pricks and rapists out there. Considering that I am doing a project about this gives me the courage to say that I want this to stop, that I want this issue to be thorough;y address, I don't want victims to ever be blamed for the shit that happened to them, I want these victims to feel safe to confess what happened to them without being harshly judged. I want to make a statement above all else that our society really needs to change their disgusting and harmful view on rape and actually do something about preventing these sex crimes from happening in the first place.
Thank you so much for leaving in your views, I will be sure to incorporate this in the rest of my research for my teacher to discuss it with me and continue on with my project.
