Question is below, you can skip if you dont wanna read all this. but please answer. I dont care if its 1 word! lol but I need to know.
Well, life has been hectic lately. A full load of classes and a weekend job, which if it continues as it is im gonna have to quit. Douchebag from the night shift stole $600 and got fired, leaving me to take over. Why? Cuz theyre cheap bastards who wont take someone else in. Ive been working there for a year and a half to 2 years, and im goddamned tired of standing behind that freaking counter. I even have to hide in order to draw cuz they wont let me, not even if theres absolutely no one coming into the store. Nightshift... tonight we got 20 customers maximum in 8 hours. Its lonely, boring, and sure the money is good, but it sucks.
Money. Heres that question coming up. My friend has been telling me to quit and do art in place of my job. Take commissions for food and stuff. I have loans and such that take care of savings and school, so that wont be a problem, and the money from work goes straight to needs and pleasure.
Question is: If I were to take commissions full time (apart from school) would you guys be interested? I understand I dont have a waiting list like some of the more popular artists, but i do need a steady weekly income. My job now gives me roughly $120 a week. I think 5 - 6 commissions a week will cover that, and thats fine. And with school going out the window in a year when I graduate, im going to need some practice, and experience, dealing with customers and the such. Illustration is a very competitive area of work, and it requires a lot of practice, skill and dedication. Lately, i havnt been doing that since my job takes alot of my free time.
To my current commissioners, I have to say I am very sorry for the delay. Ill understand if youre eager to see, and i have some sketches out ill need to scan, ill show them as soon as i can. Please please please be patient, i havnt forgotten and Im trying to do them as quickly as I can.
Please reply! Sure money isnt the most important thing in the world but its whats gonna get me to AC and its what gonna get me a new computer! For more ART! :D So please lemme know what you think about my current prices, you can see them in my last journal.

FA+

I charge around 50 dollars for a basic digital commission and I might get from 200 to 400 euros a month, but this means that I have very little or no free time at all. Whenever I hang out with my friends I draw linearts and whenever I'm home I color them. Local commissions are worth around five times more and I might get up to 300 euros for a two day's work, but this income is occasional and I can't rely on it.
I'm used to juggling with several projects, but I would never manage to draw five or six commissions a week. Sometimes it takes a week before I even get the required feedback I need to be able to work on a picture. I don't want to rain on your parade, but I recommend that you think hard before quitting your job while being rational on how much commission work you can handle. My situation is probably very different from that of yours, but I think that in any case money is something that shouldn't be taken too lightly.
Trust me I'd LOVE to raise my prices. I personally think my art is worth more, but what good is a business without customers. I guess I just cant figure out how to lure them in. Ive seen worse artists, with more popularity and commissions than me and alot of good artists, so there must be something, and I know im not an asshole. lol!
Thanks for the opinion! Ill be sure to think about it before I do. Its just frustrating being an artist in the making and working behind the counter in a gas station from midnight to 8am lol! I thought that was a job for the old people! XD
I do share your frustrations. I'd love to be able to work in the field of art and graphics full time - either in a company of some sort or as a freelancer. But these are considered to be pretty crummy jobs... Unless one manages to become popular as a comic artist or something.
I think it partly might be you need more promotion. I'd be happy to mention you in my journal or something, though that would only reach a limited number of people as I'm not particularly popular. :P
I would hope that someone with over 1000 watchers, like yourself, would have no problem getting commissioned, but that's not always the case.
By the way, your pic is non-canon. :P He doesn't have cool skills like that, unfortunately. If only. ^^;
If I get any other characters, you'll be among the people I'll want to draw them. ^.^
Canon, in terms of a fictional universe, is any material that is considered to be "genuine", or can be directly referenced as material produced by the original author or creator of a series. Basically, something that is "canon" means that it is something that "actually happened" in that fictional universe. An example of something non-canon is a fan-fiction; a fan fiction about a particular story is not "canon", as the story in the fan fiction never actually happened in that fictional universe.
RL survival comes first. And that means getting real money to pay the real bills. I sympathize because I'd love to quit and write stories for a living. But realisitically, the moment you take a hobby and turn it into your job that you have to do whether you feel the urge or not, it ceases to be fun anymore and becomes a job. So unless you want to also ruin your enjoyment of your craft, you'd be better off doing it on the side.
Im not saying im sure tho, im just pointing out my point of view. Yours is very true tho, and I appreciate it you bringing it out cuz its a damned important one. Why the fuck does this goddamned world run on time and money... fuckin eh... Ah well :P
But basically, if they change it back to the way it was, work weekends during the day, then thatll be perfectly fine. Its this night thing thats got me screwed over.
However, I can see how this could possibly benefit you in a good fashion if you are to stick to it and not let a lasping excuse like Artist Block be a hindrance to doing commissions on a professional standpoint. If your production output was just as equal to or beyond your intake, then you would have it made and be truly good to go. If you could find a solid way to keep the job or land a better one that you could work with in regard of commishes, then you would have good fortune. I can tell that you seriously don't want to deal with your current job, but you may have to tolerate it for a while longer until you can leave it without any forms of regret. The only regret you'll feel from leaving is probably a money issue at best, but that all depends on the factors behind it.
I suggest you make a list of pros and cons in regard of the decision that's floating around, then take some serious time to think it over.
Ive been giving it heavy thought tho, thanks for the opinion man :)
It's my pleasure. I based my opinion on facts and factors that could go against and for you. Some people would probably feed you a line just to be on your side, but I'm the type of friend that is willing to throw down the truth of the matter regardless of how the person would feel afterwards. The reason behind that is because people are always willing to take an action, yet are quick to feel more regret than relief. Though as I said, I'll support your decision regardless of the outcome.
