the band didn't play the song that made them famous...

Dago, his friend and myself went to see Nine Inch Nails. They were also playing with Jane's Addiction. Very cool. I figured NIN would be the feature. Okay... no? They opened for Jane's Addiction. Okay, whatever.
I got these tickets for Dago because he loves them, and i thought it would be fun. I know a few NIN songs, not a ton, but enough to have a good time. Now, don't get me wrong, they played awesomely. They ROCKED, had a ton of energy, and sounded amazing. But they didn't play Closer... The "I wanna fuck you like an animal" song... the one that put them on the map in my opinion. They played Head like a hole which was one of two they played that I knew.
But is it wrong for a band not to play the song that made them famous and that everyone came there to see them play live?
I'll be honest, those tickets weren't cheap and we didn't even stay for the whole thing cause frankly, we could care less about Jane's Addiction. I'm actually a little irritated about it. A friend who also went said they never came back out to play it either. People actually booed when they left the stage because they didn't play it. It was like, What the Hell? Kind of a slap in our face. Oh well... Dago had fun and said he enjoyed himself so that's all that mattered. And we both had the whole weekend off together. I love him.
I want to know what you think though. Ever been to a concert that didn't size up to your expectations?? This was my first that did that. And I've been to a few so I don't know what to think. Help me!

Having seen NIN a total of 8 times, I don't blame him for putting Closer to bed for the time being. It has yet to be played in this four piece incarnation.
Their current setlists have been rather fun for me as they've explored songs live that they rarely do or never have done. And for me, that's been absolutely fun.
Closer is one of my favorite songs, and it was for sure his big mainstream hit, but this could be his final tour and I think a lot of the crazier fans like myself appreciate him going out there and having fun on stage. As long as he gives it his all, I'm satisfied.
Thank you for your input and i had no idea this could be their last tour! What a bummer. Where were you sitting if you don't mind me asking, or were you in the Pit?
I was hoping to hear "I'm Afraid of Americans" at the ATL show, but I got quite a surprise with the sudden Saul Williams visit. :)
NIN and Bowie actually toured together in the mid-90's, even sharing the stage for a few songs. Good stuff. You should look into it. :)
I imagine it's hard for Trent to balance out a show to appeal to his hardcore audience as well as those who don't have quite such an insane interest in his music. Can't please everyone. I hear diehard fans complain just as often as everyone else. :P I'm happy just to see him perform. He could do Wayne Newton covers all night and I'd probably still enjoy the experience. :P
Which show did you go to? I've been looking at the setlists, but haven't seen them play any Ghost's material. I know they played quite a few Ghosts songs on their last tour (and boy was that a treat to see Trent Reznor rocking out on a marimba).
Again, thanks for the input.
Did you get there early enough to see Street Sweeper Social Club? Trent came out and did a cover of "Kick Out The Jams" with them. Looked to have been quite a surprise.
They've pulled out a few surprises like that this tour, like when Saul Williams came out during Survivalism at the show in Atlanta that I saw. Crowd went nuts.
I'm really looking forward to seeing it all again in Charlotte in June.
As far as him not playing the song, all bands play their #1's. And should continue to do so. I think its unjust to not play your #1
And for terrible concert experiences.... I went to see tool one time... and maynard james keenan stood up there ALL NIGHT with his back turned to us. wearing full black, pants, long sleeve shirt, bald head, facing away from the crowd..... I feel that I got robbed on that concert because there was NO showmanship. Didn't even move around... or point at the crowd. I was really unhappy that he didnt look at the crowd. Any bald headed guy could stand up there and impersonate him. Don't even have to lip sync.
Any ways... you are not the only one that gets upset at concerts... I know how you feel.
Man that is AWFUL about tool! Holy cow! I would be so pissed if that happened. Was he sick or something?! That's terrible. They should have offered refunds. I would have demanded one!!
Thanks for your input on this!

And Bongo, that sucks. But I have YET to go to a concert that could meet my expectations. I think I'm expecting too much.
Trent used to play practically in my backyard here in Cleveland in the 80s. He was in "Light of Day", playing with the Exotic Birds. He's an incredible artist, and one of the most outspoken, hard-lined critics of the music industry. And he STILL looks hot! ^_^
I rather think "Perfect Drug" is what put Trent on the map, but that's just the song I hear the most out here (Missouri). I'm glad you had a good time regardless, but sometimes it's hard to stay motivated when the show just doesn't hold up to what you're expecting.
I've only been to a couple of concerts, and most of them were Classic Rock bands like Lynard Skynard, Kansas, BTO and my absolute fave was Rush. I don't give a damn how old they are or how long they've been around, THEY ROCKED.
The only "recent" band I've seen in concert is Offspring, and that was several years ago. They blew an amp part way through, but they came back strong. As an added perk, they had Sum 41 open for them, back before Sum 41 had been heard of. My hometown is small, so we really didn't get a whole lot in the way of good concerts there, and anymore whenever something decent comes here to Kansas City, for one reason or another I don't want to/can't go.
I'm actually going to a B-52's concert this summer with a friend, and I can't wait. It's my second time seeing them. I had a chance to see the Police, and I wish I had! I know what you mean about the classic rock Gods. I would love to see any of them.
I'd be so bummed if I had to drive forever to see anyone. I think the farthest I've gone is to Vegas from San Diego to see Placebo and they were absolutely perfect. Totally worth it.
