How do you choose colors?

helo yes As many of you have probably noticed, I don't typically color my personal art, and I have a reason for that!
For as long as I can remember, I have been absolutely horrible at choosing colors for original characters. I can never decide on colors that please me, and it bugs the absolute hell out of me because I would love to get into actually coloring and painting more than my usual monochromatic theme.
Does anyone have any tips on how to choose colors? What works for you?

I'm bad at this myself. I have a character I haven't "seen" color for for years.
1. Adapting real-world animal colour patterns - for example "Hey, that dart frog looks awesome, but I like dusky dolphin markings" and combining them or just tweaking the patterns to fit your character.
2. Naturalistic colour schemes that work with the "where the critter would live if it were a real animal" - often with some sort of highlight or display markings
3. Strong contrasts - dark tones plus highly saturated or bright tones.

Some characters have a darker scale colour and a Lighter tint on their fronts or underbelly.
It's all really thinking about what YOU want to have in your character. Because markings can change a lot.
