Well it's ten months old but it still resonates. I took the step of finally doing adult work and trying to use it to get commissions. However I still tried to maintain my old artistic integrity within that. You want mixed results? Boy will you get 'em doing that! Ultimately I couldn't get too many commissions at any one time and eventually needed a break from the smut ideas of others to work on my own ideas, smut or not. There are certain artists I see out there you get so popular and churn out these images that I wonder if they even care about anthro art anymore. Much like yourself...don't want it to happen to me. Luckily my style of art isn't going to make me popular, most likely. Checks and balances. Although on my adult account I also very regularly point out how silly porn itself is, and break it down into various factors. I want to try to force people to think about this kind of thing.

I totally see what you mean. Infact it's exactly why I hardly ever do NSFW arts to begin with. I've seen it happen to other artists who are unfortunate enough to open that pandoras-box and let it get out of hand. More often than not they end up losing that important sense of uniqueness and passion in their arts. Which is also why I don't do commissions either. It'd be no longer for-fun if it becomes my job.

The "no longer fun" thing is exactly how I always felt about being a career artist. I wouldn't mind being able to take commissions with the kind of regularity that could supplement an income from an actual job but I'd hate to do it constantly, I usually get a sense of "dread" when I have to do even one commission, suddenly it's work. And I'm, well, an ass so I tend to think the ideas I get from others are boring and stupid and I'm not very good about hiding that when it eventually gets posted.

However, I also think that if you're able to keep your intentions in check, then even if you DID take commissions and do NSFW art you wouldn't have to lose your passion for what you do. I do both on on occasion and haven't lost sight of my artistic ideals. I don't think you'd have to either. If you want ultimate popularity you'd sort of have to but if you're just looking to make a buck here and there, it's not so bad.
