Well, this is a revamped remix of Star Fox 64, using elements from the unreleased Star Fox 2 and the original SNES Star Fox. WOlf "dies" in Star FOx 64, seemingly going down with his fighter in the final mission then too. So its quite possible they are just doing that, and...... if they DO kill him off? Well in Star Fox 2, which iiiiis playable......
He does die there.
Seems to me though, that this is gonna just be like the original, where it seems very much like he did go down with his fighter but survived.
As I recall, SF 64 honestly does the same thing. I don't foresee this meaning much, because it did not in the previous installments.
What concerns me more about this is that.. from what I've seen of trailers it seems like this is basically SF64 with more dynamic bosses/ levels. We've seen it plot-wise before.
Heck the first time the Star Wolf team died in SF64, they even came back as CYBORGS, then died again, which was never addressed in sequels. If anything, Star Wolf's deaths had been retconned out of the franchise with Assault. (which I personally feel is better at characterization, ESPECIALLY with Wolf)
It's a shame. It seems like Nintendo keeps going backward, not forward with the Star Fox franchise. SF Zero being just a rehash of the Lylat Wars, I think it's safe to say we can ignore it in the timeline.
Even the marketing tends to push SF0 as basically SF64, with their whole "Barrel Roll" ending to the most recent trailer. We're not going to get any character development here, I fear, just one-liners and memes. Regurgitated ones at that.
I actually saw the video you probably saw, and it seems I called it correctly.
Also, not sure if the game is doing the branching paths mechanic SF64 did, so I suppose it's possible that the fight may not even be mandatory.
As a whole I am withholding judgment until I play the game but I'm expecting it to be SF64 the remix, and will mostly do what I always do; replay Assault.
Host: Congratulations, Fox. You won the grand prize, and will star in a new game that'll eclipse your most amazing performance in Star Fox 64. Fox: Well, what's my new game called? Host:Star Fox 64: 3-D! Fox: But that's the same fucking game...!
I thought about it some more and it looks like others have already pointed it out as well. In StarFox 64 (his debut game a because until the rom of SF2 was released Wolf was an unknown character), defeating him appeared to be killing him off; his aircraft crashed in a fiery explosion and nothing more was said until he returned near the end all bandaged up where you once again defeat him. So maybe It's just that reiteration again, just re-vamped for the Wii U.
And on a side note, I became endeared to Wolf's character when I first encountered him in the N64 title where it really did seem tha you killed him off in the game. In StarFox adventures I was absolutely crushed that the game did not mention or cameo him at all - further solidifying that he was indeed killed off. When Assault came out it was revealed he was back again and his character took more of a role of "frenemy" or antihero. When he is defeated in Assault his craft also explodes -in space- and he still survives to annoy Fox another day.
So maybe it's a little too early to speculate that they killed him off in this upcoming title.
Either way, it's garbage. They're just repeating the same game over again with no continuation. They retconned Assault completely out of it so I'm pretty much done with the whole thing.
Smosh did an interesting parody of this, wherein Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy competed in a Jersey Shore-style thing to see who'd get to star in a new Nintendo game. Predictably, Fox won, but was unhappy when told by the guy holding the contest that the "new" game was going to be... "Star Fox 64: 3-D."
"But that's the same fucking game!" cries Fox.
Then Wolf comes in and beats him up. "Can't you win this show, Star Fox! Now prepare to diiiiiiiiiiiiiie!"
I agree with you on that! Nintendo seems more interested in making money by re-hashing their tried and true titles in (Glorious HD) so they can reach out and hook the younger generation as they did to us in the 90's. It sucks that they're not trying to explore the possible future of this story line.
I've been a Nintendo fan since day 1 but I'm really not feeling up for buying the new console knowing the trend of game making they've been following lately. I guess my only conviction to get it would be that they'd launch the new Zelda with it.
But on the flip side, when Nintendo or any other source developer doesn't deliver, or falls short in the eyes of the fans, it's the works of the fans that make those fictional universes more rich.
I've already stopped giving them money. I can't bring myself to buy any of their shit. I only bought some of the Amiibos recently so I could sell them for triple the price on ebay. Yup, I'm THAT guy. :I
