10 Cloverfield Lane

Taking a load off.
Even though I’ve never seen Cloverfield I decided to pop into cinemas to see 10 Cloverfield Lane. Let me tell you, I couldn’t have been more entertained. It was like watching a great 100-minute episode of The Twilight Zone in the cinema.
This is Dan Trachtenberg’s directorial debut, and what a debut it is! The actors all turn in great performances, with John Goodman’s unsettling survivalist character stealing the show, and, once again, proving he’s one of the great character actors currently working in Hollywood.
I could say more, but I think this movie’s best viewed without knowing much about the plot going in.
Go see it!

If "Cloverfield" is just going to be Bad Robot's strange anthology of sci-fi/horror mashup films I want to see J.J. Abrams walk onto the screen, cigarette in hand, and deliver Rod Serling monologues. XD "Imagine, if you would, three strangers in a box."
Back on the "Fuck," I was surprised by how much humor they were able to work into the film. It really is something when a story about doomsday, and a young woman being held against her will in a bunker has more humor than the latest Batman/Superman movie.
The movie's gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews, but I did see two or three critics who slammed the movie for, I quote, "poor characterization." Did they watch a different movie? 10 Cloverfield Lane is simple, to the point, and let's us know all we really needed to know about the characters. Doing anything more would have detracted from the pacing and mounting tension.
* seethes * That really bugs me, actually. XD
There are movies where this criticism is applicable *cough* Batman v. Superman *cough cough*, but the more a movie can tell through visuals, or brief snippets of dialogue, the better. xD
