A small "rant" about YCH
Awoo ! Hi everyone ^.^ !
Disclaimer:
This small "rant" of mine is not directed thorward anybody in particular and i hope it doesen't sound
offensive to anyone.
Those are my own thoughts on the matter and i hope nobody will take it personal.
If you think i've "crossed a line" and directly offended anyone of you, please let me know and i'll see what i can do.
So... we all know about YCH stuff: you bid in an auction for having your character in some artist project and the
one who pays the highest price wins, simple enough.
Let me start this by saying the concept itself is not bad on it's own as in some cases it can and does make sense like for example for large group pictures with a lot of stuff going on, and big/long term projects like comics that go beyond a certain amount of pages, animations beyond a certain lenght of time, and even images and pictures on rendered environments like games or dioramas (also if the characters themselves have some kind of rendering as well).
Even "Fixed price YCH" are good although those are more of a lottery or a FCFS (First Come First Served) kind of commission.
However the problem with the thing is that for a good 95% (being kind there) of the times we see this kind of policy applied to even the simplest and bland things like characters "sitting there for the camera doing nothing". Maybe i have a certain regard thorward money because, as you know, i'm a broken artist coming from a poor family always (or at least most of the times) very careful on how i spend it, but is it really worth to spend a lot of money for actually very simple and bland things that any artist can do with the same quality for a smaller fixed price ?
A couple of days ago i even happened to stumble onto a YCH portrait... How can anybody put on auction a portrait ?
I know it's not up to me to tell people how to spend money but what's the point on bidding for something so simple and artistically rudimental like a portrait ? It was a well done portrait for sure but i know about several artists that would have made the same exact thing with the same quality for lesser and without a "YCH" tag plastered on it.
Another problem of the YCH auctions is that in about 90% of the cases you're not even sold an "idea" or a "concept" of a picture but a "finished product", which means the picture is already finished and you are not even up to decide how the thing will look like (Except for some minor details IF possible).
Imagine you're going to the bakery to buy a choccolate cake and the shopper tells you "Nope ! Sorry, the baker today only made a strawberry cake that is up for bidding, and if you win you can choose the decorations"... what would your reaction be ? Personally i would change bakery.
Now, I'm not saying that people should not support theyr favourite artists the way they want (it would be hypocrit from me to), however there is also a line between supporting somebody and let that somebody take advantage of your goodwill.
It's a great thing to support your favourite artists with commissions and donations, i actually encourage it too (and i also do it myself when i can), but at same time the artists themselves shouldn't try to take advantage of the audience by putting up auctions for pictures anyone else made (or even still make) as "normal" commissions for a more fair price.
For how i see it, the vast majority of YCH auctions right now are as much harmful as preorders, microtransactions, and season passes in 60$ videogames. YCH auctions add nothing special to pictures you would get for the same price (Becuase let's face it: except for "big" stuff, when do those YCH pictures offer more than non YCH ones ?) and instead take away (Because is not even up to you to decide about the picture) and for an higher price too.
I'd like those YCH buyers to do one very simple thing next time they spot one: Look at the artist gallery and see if it did this kind of stuff before as "normal" commission, or even ANY other artist of the same level of skill (or with a similar style) did itand see if they do that kind of stuff as normal commission, and then ask themselves "Is it really worth to bid on something anybody else can make me for a fixed price ?"
They would be surprised how most of the times the answer is "no, it isn't !"
People should be more careful when trying to get a YCH, the Artists should (earn) and be supported with commissions and donations but people shouldn't buy into YCH if it's something they can get for a true and more fair price.
And those artists too... I don't mean to mean to offend anyone (i apologize if i do) but they should stop with this "YCH here and YCH there" as well because this way they are literally treating the audience like a bunch of dummies eager to buy anything just because there's theyr name on it or because it's in a certain style. If really they care about people following theyr art and giving feedback they shouldn't try to take advantage of others goodwill and respect like that.

FA+

But again, those are fine, indeed i'm gonna add those to the "fine" kind too.
I think part of doing the YCH is seeing one's character in a situation, or in an artist's style, that's different from the ones one normally sees oneself in. After all, you draw me quite differently from Ravica, and differently again from
Some folks also have a harder time than others describing what they want, or simply coming up with an idea. How many folks have said "Ota, draw me! Do whatever you want."? I try hard to give the artist some direction to work with, and freedom to work within that direction, but others maybe not so much.
So I don't think YCHs are necessarily bad things, especially if they give people an incentive to pay artists for making art. They're just different.
I know some people have hard time describing stuff, but i also had already some people asking me "Ota, draw me ! Do whatever you want !", or at least doing so while giving a general theme on what kind of art they wanted (Clean or naughty, Bondagey or non bondagey) and i had no problem with it (if you would do it i think i would paint a nice fancy rubber outfit, maybe with a bondage too ;) ).
Personally i never had problems with your commissions, you're good at explaining what you want and you also gave me enough freedom to work ^.^
As i sayd in the journal too, i also don't think YCH are bad di per se, but are easily abused and exploited for things that shouldn't require a YCH tag because of how simple and rudimental they are.
Nice analogy there m8
I'll admit that in both cases I've often used auctions for the slots entirely because I was trying to make money off them, but I've tried to balance that by also opening fixed price commissions and giving frequent opportunities for free art as well. I don't want to be the sort of artist who only does YCH auctions.
It's when people offer YCH for "too simple" things that doesen't feel right, at least imo
Plus I always worry if my character will cost more to be drawn for normal commissions. It's more work for the artist after all.
I also don't understand ones that have a slot which is literally just a penis visible, or some legs or something - and people bid for that xD
People are too busy jumping on the fad just because everyone else does it
Just don't buy into those
And yes. It doesn't make sense to me. An artist that charges $60-100 for a commission that's anything you want it to be will make an YCH auction and get $500.
And it sucks for 2 reasons.
-First, you'd think it would be cheaper because the artist drew whatever they wanted and just have to paint it as your character.
-Secondly, once an artist realizes that they're making 5x more from "easier" work, that's all they'll ever do. You watch one of your favorite artists to commission become completely unavailable unless they're selling pre-made sketches. Unfortunate.
With time I sadly discovered this also doesn't apply just to YCH, but there are many cases of artists becoming more and more exploitative in their own way, and that's kinda sad -3-
I'm no artist, so I don't wanna bash or anything, but I agree wholeheartedly to your post and it's sad that 5 years later it's basically the same.
I thought YCHs might be for me as my ideas are pretty basic, SFW vore things, character A in character B's belly and I thought it'd be cheaper since the pic is like, half made already and everything.
But no! They're like twice the price and I don't even get to pick both characters, background (or background is extra) plus many are set as one character type or gender.
I really don't get the point, but finding this has helped me stop wasting time looking for fair priced YCHs, I'll just stick to commissions. I get more for less.
And yes, commissions are the way to go ^^ !
100+ dollars for one slot.
And people were actually bidding on it!
For sure, commissions are great, I was just curious, but yeah, huge waste of time.
Like some others said, found this entry after googling the matter.
And i've seen both
- fixed price ych where the artists produce NFTs for many people. I've seen some get more than 10 buyers, and while the art itself was clean I would had myself spend thoses bucks on higher quality. And thoses were really feeling like copy/paste, it wasn't even just their (offten quite bland honnestly) OCs in similar poses but really the same character with different skin/fur minus small details.
- overinflated auctions, what made me start googling was the fact I spoted a TIERED ych, from tier 1 to last tier the price was multiplied by 6.... and it was barely above half of maximum bid.
At tier 3 wich was triple the price of mimimum bid it started looking like a comission that would might has been priced for the minimum bid.
And last tier is the cherry on the cake : the ych was more precisely a TF sequence, and the reward for this tier it was possible to ask the end result of the tf to look more like a dragon of your choice .... meaning just below this tier you'll pay an absurd amounth of money for a significant part of the art to be about a character that isn't even your (and can just choose the color palette )
^ Is this a bad thing ^^; ?
And as for your points, well, yes, that's YCH in a nutshell and why I made this small rant of a journal about them ^^;
