Hello everyone, Jet here! It's great to hear that people had a good time at the convention and were able to meet friends and make some new ones. With spring here comes time for a lot of things to come with events and some changes within the group.
For those that missed the presentation, you can find it HERE and I have listed the basic summary below:
- Most of our members are in the Northern Virginia area but we have 13 states represented and 4 countries (Canada, Germany, Amsterdam, Australia) represented in our midst
- Odds are you are not the only furry living in your town/city/county
- The leaders and admins/mods do a lot to make the group run efficiently but it's not just us, we rely on our members to make the environment safe and fun
If people have questions about the heat maps I created please send me a note. I know several people want to know the specific furs that live in their region but there is an issue of privacy involved hence why no names were used
From the panel we received several questions that we try to answer. I apologize in advance if I don't have the questions verbatim
"Is there a database for people to find furs in their area?"
A: We have tried doing that in the past with a different journal but it rarely gets updated and we will not divulge personal information like that without people's permission. I have seen people who are okay with revealing that information but that is a person-to-person basis
"Why don't we have events at people's homes?"
A: While that would circumvent a number of obstacles such as cost, it becomes a problem because the host(s) do not know everyone that is invited which can lead to safety concerns both for person to person and for property.
"Why don't we rent out venues for our events more often (i.e. Zootopia)?"
A: Having a base cost for an event sometimes excludes members and myself and Rechner do not want to run the risk of being left with a large cost at the end of the event. Plus having to go to everyone and asking for their share can sometimes be an issue. We may have events in the future where we do tickets like Zootopia to members who front their base cost but it takes quite a bit of planning to pull off.
"Can I run my own events not sponsored by the NOVA Fur Staff?"
A: Yes! In fact odds are we can help point you in the right direction for any problems that may come up with your event so it goes smoothly. There will be times where we cannot officially sponsor an event but that should not deter people from wanting to socialize (i.e. dinner/movie meets) with each other
"Why are the leaders so serious in the group chats?"
A: There are multiple reasons but the short answer is "There is a time and place for everything." We have minors in those chats and frankly there are other chat rooms that allow for certain types of behavior. Please be respectful of the group chat rules.
(Not-so-serious questions)
"What is the group's policy regarding pigeons?"
A: They better not be around my car during meets, but apart from that I don't foresee a problem with them
"Can Jet do my homework for me?"
A: I can help with your homework and have considered hosting some sessions this summer for those taking classes. I normally charge for my services but maybe I'll have it go for charity and/or the group's future expenses depending on level of interest
"Did Rechner really build the Zootopia crossing sign?"
A: Yes, he loves working with circuits and finishes a project once he shows a large interest in it
With the presentation, it is also meant to be a call to action for those that want to help the community by being a part of the leadership team. It takes a lot of work to have it running smoothly especially when we hope to have more events running in the near future. With that in mind, I have made a Google Form for people interested in helping us out.
Some notes:
- We are not looking for just one person. Our member base keeps growing and will continue to do so
- You do not have to attend every meet to be a part of our team. Some of what we are looking for is keeping an eye on the different chats to make sure people are following the rules and that questions are answered when they are asked.
If you have any questions please ask either myself or Rechner
Finally here are some of the events we are currently exploring for the coming weeks:
1) NOVA Bowl X (ten) - it has certainly been a while and with the passage of FTM and other furry cons, it sounds like people are ready to meet up with fellow local furs
2) AWLA (Walk for the Animals) - Rechner did this last year to help raise money for animals in need. More info can be found HERE
3) Hersheypark - This is just a rough idea but this was done last year in early May and people had quite a bit of fun. Last year we drove up early in the morning on a Saturday, spent the day at the park and drove back that night. People got candy, thrills and quite a few plushies (oh my goodness skee-ball). For those earning plushies that they don't want might want to consider donating them to a convention like FAU coming up ^^. If you are interested in an event like this, shoot me a note with the subject 'Hersheypark' so I have a rough idea of who is interested so I know how many vehicles will be needed.
4) Mini-Golf - While we do not have any plans yet for a specific course this was a blast for our suiters last year. Rhapsie can tell you how much fun people had and we look to replicate the experience this spring.
5) Laser Tag - While there were complaints about our last laser adventure, we will explore other venues and evaluate our options. This will be a non-suiting event due to safety but can still be a lot of fun.
If you have an idea for an event please let us know. I wish I could list all of the ideas we have received so far but that's all the time I have for now. Hope everyone had a good weekend and we'll see you around! *waves*

"Odds are you are not the only furry living in your town/city/county"
I know only two other furries in Calvert County Maryland. One of them runs his own business (a leather shop in Baltimore) and so he never has time to hang out. The other...Actually, I might have to look into hanging out with the other one. X3 Eh, yeah. Calvert County Maryland is a bit of a ghost town like that. XD
