I tried snoborbing!
Today I went to a big indoor ski slope at the Milton Keynes 'Xscape' building and took a couple intro lessons in snowboarding. :) It was darned good fun. It's something I've been curious about for a long time and finally prodded myself into trying, especially now that I live like five minutes' drive from the Xscape.
I had a really great time and will probably be returning for the remaining beginner lessons they offer. The instructor was good and it pretty quickly became a case of understanding what I needed to do, and just getting my body to figure it out with practise. They started us off sliding downhill facing uphill, learning the posture and finding the right balance point, then added some side to side work. Second part of the lesson was essentially the same process but facing downhill. I counted thirteen times that I fell over on my rear. No doubt I will have some interesting bruises and sitting may be a bit awkward for the next few days. But totally worth it! I think my favourite part was when we first started going side to side. Much more speed and motion and a really fun, flowing feeling to it. And like riding a bicycle, once you get a little bit of speed going the precise balance becomes a little less difficult.
Naturally, artwork will be forthcoming at some point to commemorate the experience. Huge thanks to my dragons for facilitating this as a Christmas present!

And psh - doesn't matter how many times you fell down - 'cause you got back up just as many and kept going. Now we just need to get some pictures of a decked out Dorey in all his snowboarding gear looking awesome and stuff. :3
Totally agree about falling down. ^^ My butt might not agree when I'm still whining and fidgeting each time I try to sit down anywhere over the next few days, but yeah, I just got back up and kept going. The balance is really hard to get right, but by the end I was feeling much improved and reasonably competent, at least for my first try at it!
Zel did get a picture of me in my gear before I went out, so I'll have to get that offloaded and show ya!
Protip: give yourself an extra hour to go to work, because it will take you a very long time to get out of bed, and you will walk very slowly to the office, and sitting down will be an epic adventure. Good for you! *nosekiss* :)
Heeee! Thankfully I've got tomorrow to start recovering a bit, but yeeeeeeeeeah my butt is not happy with me and I'm guessing my hips and thighs are going to have a few things to say to me tomorrow as well. XD Sitting is already being a bit of an event...
But yeahyeah it was so much fun! And it's totally at least partially your fault. ^^ When you did that refsheet for me and were talking about watching a bunch of snoborbing documentaries and enjoying the feel and culture, and made that sorta snowboardy logo for my name... it all just kinda took root and kept reminding me that I've always been curious to give it a try someday. SO I DID. XD Fankoo! *hugs!*
And YOU'RE WELCOME :3
I'm actually thinking now alternative logos for you, maybe this could become a thing. I HAVE to show you sometime the videos I have for my training... they have neat logos and attitude in them that are pretty funny. I'll tell you more privately, they're just F U N N Y and worth seeing, it goes well with what you've been doing.
Ooooooooooo more logos. ^^ Logos are cool! I've been enjoying this whole... being just a lil more sporty than usual lately thing. Between the snoborbing and the bicycling.
And goodness yes I have aches in more places than I thought I would. XD Not just from the falls on mah butt, though that's certainly some of it. All up and down the legs there are various muscles that were obviously being used for the balancing and such... but I'm surprised by how much of my upper body is stiff now too, for all that I wasn't aware of actually DOING much of anything with my upper body. In fact that's one of the early things that was hardest to force myself into; KEEPING my upper body from doing things like hunching over and flailing arms. It took a few times down the slope to force myself to just keep my back straight and shoulders back and posture upright, let the legs do all the balance work.
Also if you want the really cool stuff in snowboarding and getting amped to shred more, check out Every THird Thurdsay. ETT has all manner of PLAIN FUN that you can watch, that makes you want to get out and board, and hey-- YOU CAN EVEN MAKE YOUR OWN SNOWBORB! IMAGINE A DOREYBOB! You'll have to check out the Paper Snowboard episode, and visit the hardware shops. Pretty durable :>
Yeah - with Kayaking we at least do always have rivers and lakes nearby. The worst problem once you have everything is "time". XD
But here ya go! https://www.flickr.com/photos/doran.....in/dateposted/ Not as coordinated or stylish as in my drawing, but even so. I like to think I still look purposeful. XD
Fantastic, sweetie! I'm so glad you had a lovely day!
And now, the best part... the après-ski.... *gets a wicked grin on his face and sways his tail*
