Joan Jett may own "I Love Rock and Roll" (apologies to "The Arrows"), and Johnny Cash did the definitive version of "Hurt" (Trent Reznor agrees), but I still prefer Dolly Parton's version of "I Will Always Love You" to Whitney Houston's.

It comes down to how you like the song's message presented: if you want it to be a quiet, intimate confession between lovers, you like Dolly Parton's version. If you want a loud declaration of love to the entire world, you like Whitney Houston's version.

OP
I don't think it could be put any better than that. That's a great way to describe it.
