What are people hoping to hear when they ask this question?

Person: "Do you take requests?" <- Fair question
Me: "No." <- Simple Answer.
Person: "Why not?" <- ?
The second question just boggles my mind. What answer are they hoping to get? Are they hoping I will break down and admit I really do take requests? Are they hoping I will provide some kind of weak argument they can refute and thus prove I should take requets? Or do they really just not understand why somebody might decline when a complete stranger asks for 2 hours of time and energy from them?

people asking "why not?" after you inform them that you dont do requests is rude, you shouldnt be demanded to explain yourself for a decision you made regarding how YOU do YOUR art, every single time.
the thing poeple SHOULD be replying when you tell them you dont do em is: "ah ok, thanks anyway!"
i deal with idiots who demand me explain every little thing i do on a daily basis, so it irritates me too... ugh...
Well, that's pushing the *hope*ful parts. Most folks are probably what whasss said and just want free crap.
(Although a request for more comics pages would also be nice.)
my world became a much more interesting place since I managed to kick that whole sanity habbit.
It's not really that big of a deal to give a generic response and see what their returning argument is.
If it's something you deem stupid, pointless or insulting then I'd argue it's best to block and move on.
I understand this website can have quite a few autists but that doesn't mean some of us aren't curious about the dumbest things.
With that said, what IS the reason you're not doing requests or not care to hear of them ?
However I suppose you're thinking of something in the case of a commission rather than a request, where the user could simply be giving you an idea for some future artwork.
Back in the day I would have wished with all my heart for someone to even consider drawing something for me (although I'd never have the audacity to place a request) because artwork means the absolute world to me.
Naturally the choice is yours and you have every right to say no but I'd argue you could in fact consider it a "donation" to make someone's day all that much better.
I hope I'm not coming across as some weirdo trying to defend ass hats because that really isn't me. I just like to see it from multiple perspectives :)
Art is a commitment of time and mental application. Both of which can be in short supply for those of us that have to make a living and have lives to distract us. No matter how much we love art.
I had quite a chuckle at an artist that was asked if she took requests. She said "sure" and after a lengthy description told the person, "I have an opening for such a piece at 4:30am Jan 30, 2028." The person was furious and was booted from chat for profanity.
There's no easy way to handle that kind of person. Saying "no" should be enough, and ignoring any subsequent questions is probably the best approach.
Na most likely they are an obnoxious little oik, how rude.
I must say it can be very disappointing as when I filled in a form for a company that said ( must say it defiantly said open for commissions on their website) they where open to get a reply of quite basically "We are all busy come back when we have time". If they had been more polite I maybe would have tried again sometime.
