One thing that immediately came to mind when I was reading your response on the fragmenting of the fandom is various brony cons. I mean MLP: FIM is also its own area with lots of fans who probably don't identify as furry but who, I think, have a few commonalities simply by the nature of the material: fans of anthropomorphic animals, which the ponies certainly qualify as! I know that there's been a long standing different group dealing with transformation - which is, actually, how I ended up finding about furries to start with!

When it comes to the artist/commissioner issue, I wonder if those 'your character here' pieces actually help with that. I know there are some people who think they're uncreative, but to me it seems like the best way to solve a lot of the issues that would come about (the artist can readily adapt the basic pose, the commissioner knows what's going to be where, etc).
