Well Video-game designer is sure a great deal. Anyway many wants to be and few can actually achieve the goal. Also it is usually a team-work with a lot of stress ( schedules ... last minute change ... yeah you know, when you just finish the huge among of work ... and still for tomorrow of course !! )

Video Tester is usually done via volonteer online communities, and Alpha testing is done by the programming team ( means, it's a task added to the prime job. ) Beta test is done at home, but it is rarely paid .

Well many careers exist in computer tech, for sure, and many opportunities because it is a ' place' where skills and demonstration of talent can drives you to a job ( a close friend of mine got a coding job just because he did some sites that pleased his boss. ) So it is possible I think. Anyway I'm in France, and the working environment is different ...

There are paid game testers - it's mind numbingly boring work ("jump at this exact point 1000 times because we aren't sure if the collision detection is quite right there"), it generally doesn't rate much better than minimum wage, and it's not something that will get you much respect. HOWEVER it is one of the ways to get your foot in the door - if you want to be a designer, game tester isn't a terrible starting point.
