Of course it happens today...

When one of the worst things that could have happened has happened my PC has started to die. Is now randomly shutting down in the middle of programs. It started to do this about 2 weeks ago but now it is getting to the point that even very simple programs in Crash the PC in the middle. It used to be before I could leave a torrent or down or I could leave Skype on but now anything will crash it. This means I'll have to start trying to save up some money if I can over the next few months. This is going to be even harder since I know people with the house or trying to go to AC so I'll have to pay for that first. Mostly I'm just really disappointed because this means basically I can't do anything on my own.

I don't think it means you can't do anything on your own. Just you have had a bit of bad luck is all.
OK seriously, there is no substitute for sending your computer to a professional for repair. But if you want to do some things to try to isolate the issue, here are my suggestions. My first diagnostic is to determine if issue is hardware or software (OS or programs). I do this by booting from one of the many FREE linux live cdroms or usb thumb drives. My favorite is Puppy Linux. Get someone download and burn a Puppy Linux for you, then you can boot from the cdrom. If doing some surfing and word processing does not crash the system; it is not the motherboard. Next is to test all the memory cells.
The suggestion from dotter about a memory check is also excellent. If your system does not have a mem test; you can get someone to download and burn MemTest86+ to a cdrom or usb thumb drive. The cdrom will boot the computer and run the mem test. If there are no memory errors, time to test the hard drive electronics.
You can get someone to download and burn SEATOOLS to make a bootable CDROM. This cdrom will boot the computer and test the hard drive electronics.
So if the motherboard, RAM, and hard drive electronics are OK, lets focus on the software.
Assuming the OS is Windows, I would recommend a CHKDSK to make sure the hard drive file structure is not causing the crash.
I know the newer Windows says it constantly checks the drive, but I have seen CHKDSK find and correct things the constant check misses. I am leaving out the details on how to do a CHKDSK; it is not hard, just time consuming to type out the steps. With that eliminated as source of the crash, it is time to look at malware infections.
Malware is so common, everyone (without exception) gets it. So you need a plan to deal with it. This is such a large topic I will only cover the basic plan I use to clean computes and not the theory or alternatives plans to deal with malware. Every tech has their own personal favorite tools - these are mine at this time.
0] get a copy of BITDEFENDER RESCUE cdrom. Boot and scan with it. This will remove viruses files.
Once the virus files are not there, you can use the next steps to clean when booting Windows.
1] get a copy of TFC (temporary file cleaner) and run it. This deletes all the system temp files. IT DOES NOT ERASE COOKIES OR INTERNET HISTORY.
2] get a copy of ADWCLEANER. scan and clean with it. This get rid of the major malware and viruses.
2] get a copy of MALWAREBYTES, scan with it. This gets rid of other malware and viruses.
3] get a copy of AUS DISK DEFRAG. defrag your hard drive. Yes I know newer Windows defrags in the background, but I have seen many computers that do not defrag for many reasons. Some time the drive is so slow because of fragmentation that it is timing out and crashing programs.
4] make sure your Windows Updates are working by running it manually from Control Panel.
There is one type of virus attach that I did not cover because it is very technical and you can damage your computer. It is Advanced NTFS Boot and MFT Repair. If you have a virus in the boot track, it takes a professional to rebuild the boot track and overwrite the virus.
Warning: many virus and malware site will pretend to be the tools above. To avoid getting hit by those bad sites I give you this list of ORIGINAL PROGRAM SITES

AUS DISK DEFRAG

The newest version does keep trying to get you to buy the registry optimizer. DO NOT BUY, just use the free defrager
I have left out tons of technical details. This is only an outline of steps. If you have any questions with any of these steps, send me a note. However, some of these procedures are best done with someone walking you though the steps via skype of cell phone. Sometimes it is necessary to see the screen to know what to do next.
These are my recommendations, I am sure other professional techs will have other steps or procedures they would recommend. Heck they may even think these steps are in error somehow. All techs have their favorite procedures. But these steps my help you or others reading this post.
Best of luck with your computer.
