Usually a $1 route would be more simple as most people usually have a dollar laying around and like nicknacks. So I'd probably prefer the $1-2 route.
But if the charms are good enough, I think a $3 to $5-6 dollar range is acceptable.

thick charms for me since they are more durable. But ya like Nelizar says, most people have a dollar laying around so the thiner one works too just make it look appealing. :)

Both are good and I think $4-6 is a good price for something not mass-produced, but I think odds are better that I would get the $1 one, partly because it's cheap enough I could buy it on a whim and partly because it wouldn't make much difference to my budget for the event.
