Sticking Around after the annual FA Incident
9 years ago
Is it just me, or does there always seem to be some sort of major incident that occurs at least once a year on FA that causes a mass exiting of furs to other sites? I swear, this is like a yearly thing! But hey, it happens. After all, it's a free site to use, so I can't get upset. Plus, the FA staff worked extremely hard to bring the site back online, so props to them for making things right again.
Though i'm not leaving FA, I do have other accounts out there
Weasy: https://www.weasyl.com/~powhatan
Furry Network: https://beta.furrynetwork.com/powhatan_folf/
Twitter: Powhatan_Folf
just to name a few.
Glad to see those of you who have to decided to stick around!
I'm sticking around, however I wanna use Weasyl more, and I hope more people start making it their home-away-from-home. I really like the setup of it, however I've talked with one of the artists I follow here on FA and we both agreed getting followers and views on Weasyl just seems really difficult right now. It's a bit of a shame, really! It's got so many features but lacks the strong community for it to be worth posting there.
I'll be sure to follow you there, though! :D
they only did a partial duct tape fix on a code that has been publicly leaked.
the site will go down again soon becuese they dont want to put the site on a month+ long maint to fix the shitty coding that makes this site work.
IN FACT the ImageMagick security vulnerability was a known issue that they had an update to fix it but the admins on this site refuse to update the software and apps which put us all in danger
People love to blame FA for these problems and try to jump ship, but people forget a few things.
1. This is a free site. 99% of people complaining actually don't have a right to since they are not paying to keep it running and haven't since joining the site.
2. These attacks are not going to stop. If FA shut down tomorrow and everyone went over to Furrynetwork (or whatever is the new furry flavor of the month) these attacks would follow to the new site.
3. No website is completely hack-proof. Simple as that. There is always a way around security, and if you get a talented or determined enough hacker with enough free time on their hands, they will find a way in and mess things up.
4. People panic at the drop of a hat. People cry out for transparency. They want to know every little thing going on as if they really have a right to know, but here's the crux. Most wouldn't know what to do if they got a whiff of things that go on behind the scenes.
The smartest thing to do imo is:
Make accounts on different sites to host art, (and make them known to the commissioner when commissioned) and provide a contact email address so that there is always a line of connection between artists and commissioner. That way you don't have all your eggs in one basket, and the commissioner always have a way to contact you should something happen.
If you dont understand what exactly happened then you are the type of person who is dangerous to this site.
