Check out this online graphic novel (and be sure to use the FULL SCREEN button). It's grim but beautiful. It's a ghost story set in the swamps of New Orleans, 1933, and takes all the southern legends like Stagger Lee, Cotton Eye Joe, Bre'r Rabbit, and creates a new kind of fable. And yes, there's furry critters.
