Update From the Trenches
Hiya guys! I am now a little over a week into field school. We're excavating a Chalcolithic wedge tomb in the west of Ireland--as always, I am happy to provide details and excited archaeological commentary if anyone is interested! Basically, I'm having the most fantastic time. I'm learning to excavate, record, survey, sketch, and more, and while the context of the site is quite disturbed (badgers have fucked the stratigraphy right to badger hell) it's rich in human and animal bone and has even yielded part of a stone axehead. We should be able to get DNA and strontium readings from the teeth and petrous bones, which is always exciting. Yesterday I dug up a crumble that might be Beaker pottery and might be mud. I think it's probably mud, but it's got my supervisors all excited anyway, so here's hoping.
I spend my time either digging or lying around because digging is hard, so I haven't done any drawing or anything else productive in my downtime lately, but I do plan to doodle some Pokémon in the back of my notebook this week because I am doing my very best to play Pokémon Go in this tiny, tiny town in Co. Clare and am enjoying it immensely. Yesterday I took a picture of one of my friends petting an Oddish. It's great. Aaand now I'm going to bed because I stayed up way too late chatting with a zooarchaeologist in a pub last night. Life is good.
