I used to do this thing where I would write out a scene using only one page in a notebook. Sometimes I would also just start describing a setting, then the story just grows from there.

I can give you some of the ones (or very similar) my teacher used to do. They're meant for short scenes or stories, though I found they really helped me grow as a writer.

Oooookay. Here's some:

* A scene where two people talk about a past event without naming what it was. It is wintertime. The scene must contain coffee or tea.

* A letter written where someone tells about a fight they lost, and a secret is revealed; it could be something revealed to the person the letter is addressed to, or to someone discussed in the letter.

* A story involving sunset, a walk home, and an accidental meeting.

* A story that takes place at three different time points, and centers in the telling around something to do with cards, such as a card game or a tarot reading.

* A scene with a misunderstanding, a person writing something by hand, and at least one person in the scene only speaks one sentence.
