- Pricing guidelines. Even if it's just a ballpark figure, it puts everyone on the same page as far as expectations go. It also helps avoid hurt feelings all around, e.g. if someone asks for a complex background and then finds out it costs more for that.
- When payment is expected and by what means. That way you don't finish a piece for someone and then find out they wanted to mail you a postdated check or something stupid like that.
- And the really important one: Usage guidelines. Can people repost it with credit? Do you care where they repost it? Can they modify it? Some artists are really sensitive about that kind of thing whereas others couldn't care less, so it's nice to know beforehand. It would be pretty awkward to finish a piece for someone, close the transaction, then find out they were planning on doing something with it you didn't want them to do but hadn't actually said not to before starting the work.
Even if it's just a few sentences (e.g. "here's a list of examples and their prices. I expect half up front and half on completion via paypal. You can post your commissioned piece anywhere, but please get my permission first if you want to modify it"), it's something you'll be really happy you had in the unlikely event a dispute ever arises.
