I have read comments from people actually defending these police actions. What the hell? How can this behaviour ever be justified? This nation has no honor and no shame. These are the things we must face on a daily basis. Nothing has changed.

I thought the election of Trump to representative of the Republican party and potential future president of the United States should have made it rather obvious we lack both shame and honor but, of course, it was obvious long before that with the various ways the government has treated people over the years. I doubt that there is a single treaty the US made with Natives that it's actually upheld in full.

Over 500 treaties have been signed, over 370 have been ratified, 0 have been honored.

The fact that Trump is close to running for president speaks loads about where this country's values are; but with that in mind, Obama and Clinton have not been friends to Native people either, more than that, they've turned their backs on us. Republicans have always fought against Native rights but Democrats promised to be on our sides and have not. For Natives dems vs reps are just the Broken Treaty Party vs the War on Natives party.

To me, being honorable is doing what one said one would do even if it is at great personal cost.

The actions of the United States toward native people is completely sickening, abhorrent and unacceptable, but that, sadly, is nothing new. Many non-native people in the US who do not live near any sizable native population (and plenty who do) have no clue just how messed up the situation is. That was certainly the case when I lived on the East Coast (DC), where all of the country's policy is created. Consider too that the Nazis based the majority of their ethnic cleansing methods on what the US, Canada and Mexico did (and continue to do) to native peoples in the Americas, and one will see just how disgusting the seedy underbelly of "Our Great Nation" really is. Make America Great Again? Through what, the creation of eugenics and the use of ethnic cleansing that was so effective it gave a constipated little German sociopath the idea to decimate entire populations in the early 20th century? No thank you, I think that we can (and absolutely have to) do much better than that...

I've donated money to Standing Rock and signed various petitions for Oak Flat and others here in Arizona, but it just seems to me that using the same system that has oppressed native people more than ANY other group in this hemisphere is not effective enough. But hopefully that's just jaded old me. Every little bit helps, and I hope that some kind of change is made and that we can stop this insanity and treat people with the respect that they deserve. Humanity will continue to devolve if we cannot learn and act with compassion. If we cannot learn to be compassionate and respectful towards other people and the planet, our species is doomed to drown itself in the sea of selfishness and hatred that the "western world" has been wallowing in and forcing upon everyone else for nearly 2 thousand years. It's time for something new and better now, and it will take all of us working together to do it. But we can do it, and we must.

these issues are a huge indicator that not only does this govt have a racial issues, bigger picture there is a HUGE systematic issue. time to kick it till it breaks. prayers and everything i can sent that way. debating a trip.

this is sickening and heart wrenching

If it were not for the fact that many of the water protectors are recording and live streaming these events with their phones and cameras, things would be much worse. This is the only thing stopping an all out assault. The government cannot get away with slaughtering unarmed indigenous people the way they used to do. The world is watching.
